Excerpt from The South Carolina College on Commencement Day, June Address Before Mr. President, Gentlemen of the Board of Trustees and of the Faculty, and Fellow-citizens: When your kind invitation came to me to make your annual address, I confess I felt the compliment very deeply. I regard it as a very signal honor to be called, at this time, to perform this duty. Yours is no ordinary history, and, in view of what your past requires of you, it would be impossible not to construe this trust, for so I regard it, as a mark of great respect from so self-respecting and thoughtful a people. So soon, too, after your reorganization, weighty problems, requiring the nicest judgment for correct solution, are pressing upon you; and it is but reasonable to suppose that at such time, no vain rhetorical pageant - the lay figures and wax-works of thought - would suffice; but that you expect some solid contribution to the available fund of educational philosophy or practical methods. All this made your request a very flattering one, but it imposes a responsibility well-nigh appalling to a man so occupied and so unambitious as myself. My effort in life is, when I speak, to say some useful word, and when I act to do some useful thing. But, on these public occasions, paradox, so alluring to some minds and so titillating to the fancy of many, is almost demanded of the speaker, and common sense is too apt to be regarded as mere common-place. Nevertheless, it cannot be that judicious words, even without the graces of manner or diction, can ever come amiss to a people so thoughtful (as I have already said), as the people of South Carolina; and, in speaking to you to-day, I know I am addressing the heart and brain of South Carolina. I will go therefore, I said, to this ancient and honorable people with the thoughts and ideas my mind has shaped in regard to education, not for their instruction, but as suggestive merely; and, with their minds all wide awake and intent on such matters, they will sift out whatever is of practical value to them. Excerpt from Fifty Years Since: An Address, Delivered Before the Alumni of the University of North-Carolina, on the 7th of June, 1859, (Being the Being Day Before the Annual Commencement;) May heaven avert the omen! Had I said this at the city of Washington, and were I some quarter of a century younger, his Excellency might consider this exordium as the prelude to some application for office; but on an academical jubilee like this, and from a speaker bordering on three-score and seven, he will receive it, I trust, only as the cordial and sincere expression of that rejoicing which we all feel at the honor of this visit. Yes, a truce from office-seeking here at least. We are glad to find that the President has survived that period of vexatious importunity - that crown of thorns which every President is obliged to wear on his first accession, - and that ho is likely, from present appearances, to servo his country for many years to come. I believe it is expected of the speaker to the Alumni that he shall entertain them with reminiscences of persons and things long gone by - the longer the better. Hence the selection, for this year, of your humble servant, there being very few now surviving who can number half a century from their graduation. And although I am neither a bachelor nor a widower, and therefore have no interest in making myself out younger than I am with my fair auditors, yet I will merely hint to this benovolent assembly that although it is just fifty years since I got my sheepskin, I was then in my pr texta, and had not yet put on the toga virilis. I shall, however, be happy if I get through the task of this day without extorting from some of my hearers the exclamation of the Roman satirist: "The old steed is broken down; take him from the turf before he disgraces himself." Particularly might my friends be anxious about me now as having to perform my part of the duties of this occasion after the display of this morning.
