The Significance Impulse

The Significance Impulse PDF Author: Joshua Glasgow
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0197754759
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Book Description
Why should we strive to be important? Does it make our lives go better if we are especially significant? The Significance Impulse argues that the common impulse to seek exceptionally high levels of significance is misguided. Although many people strive to be extraordinarily significant, ultimately cosmic importance is out of reach for us. And though we do matter somewhat, it can be a liberating relief to take a more irreverent stance towards our lives and embrace our unimportance. This book is a testament to being ordinary.

Improving the Attention Span of Children with Autism Using Origami

Improving the Attention Span of Children with Autism Using Origami PDF Author: Luke Santamaria
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3668024464
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 190

Book Description
Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject Pedagogy - Orthopaedagogy and Special Education, grade: Early Childhood Education Level, , course: Master of Arts, Major in Special Education, language: English, abstract: If you have a child with autism or are working with children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), this book may be for you. When I was teaching children with autism, I was trying to find a way to get them to focus their attention to the task at hand. I realized that children with ASD prefer to deal with things and can be very creative in their own way. I figured out that maybe they can learn to fold and write, which are important tasks reinforced through occupational therapy. It was during my thesis writing when I came up with the idea of trying out origami or paper-folding as a form of intervention. My goal was to see if origami could significantly improve the attending skills and impulse-control behaviors of children with ASD at the preschool where I worked. To make the terminology shorter, the improvement of attending skills also means the reduction of inattention and the lengthening of attention span. The improvement of impulse control also meant the reduction of impulsivity. I developed an origami instructional manual to make sure that the intervention given to each child is consistent. The manual involves very simple origami instructions and involves some drawing and uses paper in varying sizes, colors and textures to keep the child interested. The results showed that the use of origami as an intervention significantly improved the attending skills of the participating children with ASD. As for the improvement of impulse control, impulsivity is affected by many variables and the results showed no significant change. Although my participants showed some improvement, it was not significant enough. I hope you can try to replicate this instructional manual to your child or students and see if this can help you. I made it my goal to have this research published as an eBook with the hopes that it will be affordable for you. Once again, please try out this book and see if it can help you.

Treatise on Physiological Optics, Volume III

Treatise on Physiological Optics, Volume III PDF Author: Hermann von Helmholtz
Publisher: Courier Corporation
ISBN: 0486174700
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 980

Book Description
The most important work ever produced in the field of physiological optics, this classic is a model of scientific method and logical procedure, and it remains unmatched in its thorough and accessible approach. This is the third in a three-volume republication of the definitive English translation of Handbuch der Physiologischen Optik, originally published by The Optical Society of America in 1924 and containing everything that was known about physiological optics up until that time. The substratum consists of the data that Helmholtz furnished in the two nineteenth-century German editions that appeared during his lifetime. These volumes also contain extensive supplementary matter that Nagel, Gullstrand, and Kries incorporated in the third German edition of 1911, as well as significant new material prepared for the 1924 English translation by C. Ladd-Franklin, Gullstrand, and Kries, with copious annotations by James P. C. Southall that brought the work up to date with current research. Volumes I and II discuss the dioptrics of the eye and the sensations of vision;Volume III examines the perceptions of vision. Its topics include eye movements; the monocular field of vision; direction of vision; perception of depth; binocular vision; and many other highly important topics. Appendixes cover later findings on spatial configuration in vision and the theory of binocular instruments. Indexes for all three volumes are organized by subject and author.
