Book Description
This carefully crafted ebook: “The Shepherd's Calendar and Other Tales from Scottish Highlands” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. James Hogg wrote some of his best stories in The Shepherd's Calendar, in which he defines the content and the manners of the traditional storytelling of Ettrick Forest, the mountainous region in Scotland where he grew up. They reveal Hogg's experiences as a young shepherd as it draws a picture of the pleasures and the dangers of the lives in Scottish Highlands. Some of these stories deal with the supernatural and explore psychological depths with a noteworthy intensity and insight. Large parts of these tales are written in a Scots dialect from the region of Ettrick Forest. The Shepherd's Calendar: Rob Dodds Mr Adamson of Laverhope The Prodigal Son The School of Misfortune George Dobson's Expedition to Hell The Souters of Selkirk The Laird of Cassway Tibby Hyslop's Dream Mary Burnet The Brownie of the Black Haggs The Laird of Wineholm Window Wat's Courtship A Strange Secret The Marvellous Doctor The Witches of Traquair Sheep Prayers Odd Characters Nancy Chisholm Snow-Storms The Shepherd's Dog The Expedition to Hell The Mysterious Bride The Wool-Gatherer The Hunt of Eildon James Hogg (1770-1835) was a Scottish poet, novelist and essayist who wrote in both Scots and English. As a young man he worked as a shepherd and farmhand, and was largely self-educated through reading. He was a friend of many of the great writers of his day, including Sir Walter Scott, of whom he later wrote an unauthorized biography.

Abraham Fraunce, 'The Shepherds' Logic' and Other Dialectical Writings

Abraham Fraunce, 'The Shepherds' Logic' and Other Dialectical Writings PDF Author: Zenón Luis-Martínez
Publisher: MHRA
ISBN: 1781881243
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 230

Book Description
Abraham Fraunce’s The Shepherds’ Logic (c. 1585) is one of the first English adaptations of Petrus Ramus’s Dialecticae libri duo (1556). Preserved in a manuscript also containing two shorter essays on Ramist dialectic, the work was later modified and enlarged for publication as The Lawyers’ Logic (1588). But Fraunce’s substantial and almost exclusive use of Edmund Spenser’s The Shepherds’ Calendar (1579) as the source for practical examples makes the manuscript treatise a unique document revealing the influence of the Ramist reform of the arts of discourse on the new literary elite led by Philip Sidney and Gabriel Harvey. This is the first published critical edition of Fraunce’s early treatise and the two companion essays. It presents the texts in modernized spelling, traces their sources and contexts, and draws out their literary and philosophical implications. It also includes relevant excerpts from The Lawyers’ Logic, such as Fraunce’s quantitative-verse translation of Virgil’s Second Eclogue and its Ramist analysis, and a full catalogue of the quotations from Spenser’s Calendar. As a whole, this edition sees Fraunce’s pastoral logic as a first-hand testimony showing how scholarly training in the Renaissance arts of discourse enlightened the composition and interpretation of poetic texts.

Edmund Spenser's Shepheardes Calender (1579)

Edmund Spenser's Shepheardes Calender (1579) PDF Author: Kenneth Borris
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 1526133474
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 368

Book Description
Spenser’s extraordinary Shepheardes Calender as first printed in 1579 is arguably the seminal book of the Elizabethan literary renaissance. This volume reassesses it as a material text in relation to book history, and provides the first clearly detailed facsimile of the 1579 Calender available as a book. The editor reconsiders the original book’s development, production, design, and particular characteristics, and demonstrates both its correlations with diverse precursors in print and its significant departures. Numerous illustrations of archival sources facilitate comparison. By reinvestigating the 1579 Calender’s twelve pictures, he shows that Spenser himself probably designed them, that they involve complex symbolism, and that this book’s meaning is thus profoundly verbal-visual. An analyzed facsimile is an essential new resource for study of Spenser’s Calender, Spenser, Elizabethan print and poetics, and early modern English literary history.
