Book Description
The objective of this study was to determine which soil characteristics should be used to assess soil sensitivity to acidic inputs. The neutralizing capacity and buffering range of some Sierra Nevada soils to acidic inputs were also evaluated. Samples of surface and subsurface horizons of soils in mountainous watersheds in California were used in this study. The soils were characterized through chemical, physical, mineralogical analysis. Analytical data for saturation extracts were used as input to GEOCHEM in order to assess the controlling minerals for Al activity. The major controlling minerals were gibbsite and jurbanite. Aluminum exchange and hydrolysis of minerals containing aluminum in the Sierra Nevada acidic forest soils might be important potential sources of pH buffering. A simple semiempirical model was developed to predict changes in soil pH. The model predictions using field data indicated a slow decrease in soil pH.-- Adapted from abstract.
