Book Description
Excerpt from The Second Annual Report of the Free Library Committee of the Borough of Great Yarmouth, 1887-88: With Supplementary Catalogue Appended Librarian. - The next important matter was the selection of a Librarian. In answer to their advertisement, the Committee received applications from 102 candidates four of these were requested to attend personally before the Committee, who ultimately selected mr. William carter for the post, and he entered upon his duties in February, 1886, in order to assist the Committee in the furnishing of the Library, the preparation of the rules, and the purchase and classification of the books. Mr. Carter had had considerable previous experience in the Manchester Free Libraries, where he had gained a thorough knowledge of all the details of a librarian's work; and the Committee consider it only fair to state that, in their opinion, the remarkable success which has hitherto attended this Institution is very largely due to the intelligence with which he advised the Committee in making all the preliminary arrange ments, and the zeal and courtesy with which he has since the opening of the Library invariably discharged his duties. He is assisted by two boys, who have also conducted themselves to the satisfaction of the Committee. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
