Book Description
Excerpt from Feeds and Feeding: A Hand-Book for the Student and Stockman Feeds and Feeding, first published in March, 1898, was received with immediate and widespread favor by practical stockmen, as well as by the professors and students of animal husbandry in our agricultural colleges and secondary schools. The plan of the book had been laid along original lines, and neither time, labor, nor expense was spared in its preparation. In 1910, after nine editions had come from the press, the book was entirely rewritten and improved in many ways. Again in 1915 the book was completely rewritten and improved in many ways. Again in 1915 the book was completely rewritten and enlarged to include the recent information, both scientific and practical. To this revision Professor Morrison, who had assisted thruout the first revision and who now became joint author, devoted much time, with a corps of trained assistants, during a period of over two years. The favour with which this second revision was received exhausted two large editions in less than two years and nine printings of the last edition have been required in rapid sucession. During the past few years exceedingly important discoveries have been made concerning the science and practice of live stock feeding. Furthermore, economic conditions have radically changed. Therefore, Professor Morrison has again entirely rewritten the book to include the latest information and to adapt it to changed economic conditions since the World War. Just as in the previous revision, the results of many important investigations, completed so recently as not yet to be in print, have been furnished by scientists thruout the country, in order that the findings might be presented in this revision. It is the aim to give Feeds and Feeding an unbiased and condensed presentation of the most important findings of the investigators of both the Old and New Worlds in the science of animal nutrition, together with the most important results of the vast number of feeding trials which have been conducted at the experiment stations in the United States and other countries, the whole being rounded out by the practical experiences of many of the leading stockmen of America. The authors have not relied merely on a thoro study of the published information on nutrition and stock feeding, but have gained personal contact with conditions in various districts by extensive travel. Part I presents briefly the fundamental principles of animal nutrition, including the most recent discoveries of the scientists. The bearing of these principles upon the practical feeding of live stock is given especial emphasis. Particular attention is given to the newer discoveries in nutrition, including the functions and importance of vitamins and mineral matter, as well as the differences in the quality of food proteins from various sources. The Feeding of Crops and Stock

Book Description
Excerpt from The Feeding of Crops and Stock: An Introduction to the Science of the Nutrition of Plants and Animals In this book I have endeavoured to provide a general introduction to the science of growing crops and feeding animals: an outline, in fact, of the theory of the nutrition, first of the plant and then of the animal. The book is intended on one side to give the student of agriculture a general framework of ideas, before he enters upon the more detailed study of agricultural chemistry that will be presented to him by his professor. I have found that such students often experience a difficulty in following and making the best use of their lectures because the whole trend of the subject is strange to them; they would be better able to appreciate the value of the illustrations they receive if they could at once see their bearing upon the scheme of nutrition of plant or animal. Book Description
Excerpt from Profitable Stock Feeding: A Book for the Farmer It is out of the province of a book on feeding to include diseases of animals, but it seemed best to treat briefly of certain intestinal parasites found in sheep, inasmuch as this is a common disorder, but one easily guarded against. The thanks of the writer are due Mr. Joseph E. Wing, of Ohio, for the preparation of the chapter on parasites in sheep, and for reviewing other copy on sheep. The part devoted to sheep feeding was also reviewed by Hon. Peter Jansen, of Nebraska, well known for his success in feeding sheep on a large scale.
