Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - Our forests, with their billions of trees, are the backbone of agriculture, the skeleton of lumbering, and the heart of industry. Even now, in spite of their depletion, they are the cream of our natural resources. They furnish wood for the nation, pasture for thousands of cattle and sheep, and water supply for countless cities and farms. They are the dominions of wild life. Millions of birds, game animals, and fish live in the forests and the forest streams. The time is coming when our forests will be the greatest playgrounds of America. It is necessary that we preserve, protect, and expand our timberlands. By so doing we shall provide for the needs of future generations.

Daughter of the Forest

Daughter of the Forest PDF Author: Juliet Marillier
Publisher: Macmillan
ISBN: 1429913460
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 564

Book Description
Daughter of the Forest is a testimony to an incredible author's talent, a first novel and the beginning of a trilogy like no other: a mixture of history and fantasy, myth and magic, legend and love. Lord Colum of Sevenwaters is blessed with six sons: Liam, a natural leader; Diarmid, with his passion for adventure; twins Cormack and Conor, each with a different calling; rebellious Finbar, grown old before his time by his gift of the Sight; and the young, compassionate Padriac. But it is Sorcha, the seventh child and only daughter, who alone is destined to defend her family and protect her land from the Britons and the clan known as Northwoods. For her father has been bewitched, and her brothers bound by a spell that only Sorcha can lift. To reclaim the lives of her brothers, Sorcha leaves the only safe place she has ever known, and embarks on a journey filled with pain, loss, and terror. When she is kidnapped by enemy forces and taken to a foreign land, it seems that there will be no way for her to break the spell that condemns all that she loves. But magic knows no boundaries, and Sorcha will have to choose between the life she has always known and a love that comes only once. Juliet Marillier is a rare talent, a writer who can imbue her characters and her story with such warmth, such heart, that no reader can come away from her work untouched. Continuous Cover Forestry

Continuous Cover Forestry PDF Author: Timo Pukkala
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400722028
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 298

Book Description
Although the majority of the world’s forest ecosystems are dominated by uneven-sized multi-species stands, forest management practice and theory has focused on the development of plantation monocultures to maximize the supply of timber at low cost. Societal expectations are changing, however, and uneven-aged multi-species ecosystems, selectively managed as Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF), are often believed to be superior to monocultures in addressing a wide range of expectations. This book presents methods which are relevant to CCF management and planning: analysing forest structures, silvicultural and planning, economic evaluation, based on examples in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America.

How The Other Half Learns

How The Other Half Learns PDF Author: Robert Pondiscio
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 0525533753
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 386

Book Description
An inside look at America's most controversial charter schools, and the moral and political questions around public education and school choice. The promise of public education is excellence for all. But that promise has seldom been kept for low-income children of color in America. In How the Other Half Learns, teacher and education journalist Robert Pondiscio focuses on Success Academy, the network of controversial charter schools in New York City founded by Eva Moskowitz, who has created something unprecedented in American education: a way for large numbers of engaged and ambitious low-income families of color to get an education for their children that equals and even exceeds what wealthy families take for granted. Her results are astonishing, her methods unorthodox. Decades of well-intended efforts to improve our schools and close the "achievement gap" have set equity and excellence at war with each other: If you are wealthy, with the means to pay private school tuition or move to an affluent community, you can get your child into an excellent school. But if you are poor and black or brown, you have to settle for "equity" and a lecture--about fairness. About the need to be patient. And about how school choice for you only damages public schools for everyone else. Thousands of parents have chosen Success Academy, and thousands more sit on waiting lists to get in. But Moskowitz herself admits Success Academy "is not for everyone," and this raises uncomfortable questions we'd rather not ask, let alone answer: What if the price of giving a first-rate education to children least likely to receive it means acknowledging that you can't do it for everyone? What if some problems are just too hard for schools alone to solve?

Why Forests? Why Now?

Why Forests? Why Now? PDF Author: Frances Seymour
Publisher: Brookings Institution Press
ISBN: 1933286865
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 389

Book Description
Tropical forests are an undervalued asset in meeting the greatest global challenges of our time—averting climate change and promoting development. Despite their importance, tropical forests and their ecosystems are being destroyed at a high and even increasing rate in most forest-rich countries. The good news is that the science, economics, and politics are aligned to support a major international effort over the next five years to reverse tropical deforestation. Why Forests? Why Now? synthesizes the latest evidence on the importance of tropical forests in a way that is accessible to anyone interested in climate change and development and to readers already familiar with the problem of deforestation. It makes the case to decisionmakers in rich countries that rewarding developing countries for protecting their forests is urgent, affordable, and achievable.

Silencing Thomas Kerl

Silencing Thomas Kerl PDF Author: Stephen (Steve) McCrea
Publisher: Stephen B. McCrea
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 136

Book Description
The decision of the United States to join the first World War required a monumental effort by the government to ensure victory. The burgeoning industrial and agricultural economy of the nation had already mobilized in support of Great Britain, France and the allied forces. Without the support of the populace the war effort would fail. President Wilson’s administration spent millions of dollars to ensure the citizens would support the cause. In the course of doing so the voice of those opposed were silenced at the direction of the government. Thomas Kerl was one of those whose opinions were muzzled by government action. His biography reveals the story of a young man growing up in Nebraska. His father immigrated to this country at an early age from Bavaria and became a successful author of textbooks. Kerl grew up on the farmland inherited from his father, became educated and traveled around the country and the world. He moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and was elected as a state legislator. Intelligent and well-read, he was a farmer, educator, lawyer, philanthropist, land developer, and lover of the fine arts who shared his knowledge and opinions with neighbors and friends. His scandalous divorce made news throughout the state. After the war in Europe commenced, he made no anti-war speeches, wrote no editorials. But privately he expressed doubts to acquaintances. Government efforts to sway public opinion had incited anti-German behavior. Anyone who expressed anti-war sentiments was considered to be disloyal. His words were spun by the authorities into violations of the Espionage Act of 1917 and resulted in his trial in Federal Court in Nebraska. This recounting of one man’s life demonstrates how easily individual rights can be suppressed by the government. It gives insight into the reason the United States became involved in the war and how Federal propaganda efforts reached all levels of society.
