Book Description
Excerpt from The Salvage of a Sailor Indeed, there was a need for hurry. She, a four-masted sailing ship, the Megalon, laden down to her Plimsoll with salt from Liverpool for Calcutta, had been caught aback in one of the worst places in the world, off the pitch of the Cape of Good Hope, and the watch on deck, Heaven help them, had about as much value in this emergency as a mar trying to push a wagon up a hill. So it was 0 wonder that the mate tore his lungs in a yell of All hands! And beat frantically upon the forecastle door with a belaying pin as a man might locked within a room in a burning house. Book Description
Excerpt from The Sailor "Enery Arper," said the woman with a shrill snigger not unlike the whinny of a horse, "Auntie said she'd wait up for you, didn't she? And she always keeps a promise, don't she, my boy?" The figure six yards away the fog was doing its best to hide cowered yet closer to the wall. "And what was it, Enery, that Auntie promised you if you come 'ome again with ninepence?" The wheeze of the voice had a note of humor. The boy was wedged so close to the wall that he had barked the skin off his bare knees. The woman, watching him intently, began to trail the heavy lash on the cobbled yard. "Said she'd make it up to a shillin' for you, didn't she? ... if you come 'ome again with ninepence. Said she'd cut the heart out o' you ... same as if it was the eye of a pertater." A powerful arm was already loose. The eye of an expert had the distance measured to a nicety. "Clean out." A scream, followed that was not human. The heavy whip had caught the boy round the unprotected thighs. "I'll do ye in this time." Mad with pain and terror the boy dashed straight at her, charging like a desperate animal, as with leisurely ferocity she prepared for a second cut at him. The impact of his body was so unexpected that it nearly knocked her down. It was his only chance. Before she could recover her balance he was out of the gate and away in the fog. A lane ran past the yard. He was in it before the whip could reach him again; in it and running for his life. The lane was short, straight and very narrow, with high walls on both sides. Book Description
Excerpt from She Loved a Sailor Love As A Sailor. "Far, far upon the sea, The good ship speeding free, Upon the deck we gather, young and old, And view the flapping sail, Spreading out before the gale, Full and round, without a wrinkle or a fold; Or watch the wave's that glide By the stately vessel's side, And the wild sea birds that follow through the air; Oh! gayly goes the ship when the wind blows fair!" "Follow, follow, round the earth, The green earth and the sea; So love is with the lover's heart, Wherever he may be." When the very old men of this generation were very young men, some of them may have stood upon the banks of the East River and watched the "Arethusa" come flying in before the wind, her deck crowded with homecoming Americans, and the English mail safe in her hold. Book Description
Excerpt from Recollections of a Sailor, Vol. 1 They have answered the object for which they were originally penned. As they have been not altogether unacceptable to the readers of the Nautical Magazine, where they first, and only very recently, appeared, the Author is induced to repub lish them in the hope that they may be at least equally so to the general public. If the anticipation of the future be pleasant, and it is often more pleasant than the realisation, the recollections of past labours are not less agreeable.
