Book Description
Traditionally, the Order of Malta is a Hospitaller and Knights Crusader Order. Most representations - as illustrations or text - emphasize the military element. By comparison, the aim and subject matter of this source edition is meant to show the original state of the Order, its hospital situated at the central location of the Order with the relevant rules in the Notizia della Sacra Infermeria. For the Order, the regulations concerning the hospital were of special importance right from the beginning. In this book, the rules applied during the 18th century are particularly explained. The loss of the Order State on Malta in 1798 marked also the end of the classic hospitaller period of the knight brothers. Today, there are hardly any stipulations contained in their central modern rules and regulations concerning hospital organization respectively hospital work. (Series: IUS VIVENS /Abteilung A: Quellentexte zur Rechtsgeschichte - Vol. 9) [Subject: History, Legal History]

Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1440855455
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 1068
Book Description
This two-volume encyclopedia profiles the contemporary culture and society of every country in Europe. Each country receives a chapter encompassing such topics as religion, lifestyle and leisure, standard of living, cuisine, gender roles, relationships, dress, music, visual arts, and architecture. This authoritative and comprehensive encyclopedia provides readers with richly detailed entries on the 45 nations that comprise modern Europe. Each country profile looks at elements of contemporary life related to family and work, including popular pastimes, customs, beliefs, and attitudes. Students can make cross-cultural comparisons-for instance, a student could compare social customs in Denmark with those in Norway, compare Greece's cuisine with that of Italy, and contrast the architecture of Paris with Amsterdam and Barcelona. Culture and society are changing in each region and nation of Europe due to many political and economic forces, both inside and outside of each nation's borders. This encyclopedia considers many of the transformations connected to globalization, as well as traditions that still hold strong, to provide a complete assessment of the processes that make European societies and cultures distinctive.

These mediciners not only employed the leading cures of medieval Europe but also learned new methods from the local folk-healers and Arabic healing traditions they encountered on their journeys. He details recipes for many cures and a range of magico-medical applications such as charms, spells, enchantments, and amulets used to address the new illnesses of strange and foreign lands. He includes a detailed and comprehensive herbal, listing all the plants and materials needed to make and administer the remedies of the cure-all. He also details his travels in the steps of the Crusader physicians throughout Poland, the Czech Republic, Malta, Morocco, and the island of Rhodes where he met with healers still following this healing path who shared their practices with him. Revealing how the healers of the Crusades helped elevate Western medical knowledge through the integration of wisdom from their Middle Eastern counterparts, Hughes shows how their legacy continues through the many effective remedies and healing modalities still in use today.
