Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: Livelihoods are ‘means of making a living’, the various activities and resources that allow people to live. It comprises the capabilities, assets (including both material and social) and activities required for a means of living. Thus, microfinance programs have been considered as one of the main instruments in livelihood improvement in recent development agenda. Microfinance comprises the provision of financial services including credit and other facilities like savings, insurance, and transfer services to poor household. The study was conducted in Geniji-Dalecho and Bulbulo kebeles among 35 target kebeles of the OCSSCO. The main objective of the study is to identify the contribution of OCSSCO in improving household livelihood through providing credit. Further, the study used both primary and secondary data sources. The primary data was collected with semi-structured interview and focus group discussion from sampled respondents; whereas, secondary data gathered from different documents of the microfinance institution that exists in the study area. Stratified random sampling was used to select 60 respondents (35 beneficiaries and 25 non-beneficiaries) based on the principle of probability proportional to size (pps). Generally, Microfinance Institutions have an explicit potential that intends to improve the livelihoods of households. While improving livelihood, microfinance (OCSSCO) credit service increases the income of the clients; which, in turn, enable them educating their children and improves their nutritional status. Inferential statistics such as crosstabs; independent sample t-test and custom table are used in data analysis. Descriptive statistics like frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were employed to analyze the data. Chi-square (for categorical variables) and t-test (for continuous variables) were used to see the significance of the relationships of independent variables with dependent variables. Moreover, the qualitative data was analyzed by describing, summarizing and interpreting for further clarity. Finally, conclusion and recommendation were made based on the findings obtained from result and discussion. Key words: assets, client, role, microfinance institution, livelihood,

Book Description
This book explores the role and effect of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) with different dimensions. It is being supported with strong empirical evidence into various parameters of MFIs directed towards inclusive finance and the transformation journey of livelihoods of its beneficiaries. It also incorporates empirical evidence with the perception of both beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries. Starting its journey toward the path of comprehending how MFIs make their footprint among the excluded population in the selected areas, it incorporates the different outcomes of MFI lending like credit utilisation patterns, income generation, and employability. As financial stability helps to break out the vicious cycle of poverty, this book emphasises the self-dependent element for the beneficiaries and their households. It addresses the important issue of the female counterparts in society. It shows how the MFIs work actively to generate female empowerment from multiple dimensions among the selected communities. It addresses key issues to consider for inclusive policy formulation, especially for backward communities in the backward areas and gives a realistic scenario of the MFI activities, their interactions with the respondents, the various outcomes, and areas for further developments, etc. This book is beneficial for academicians, researchers, and policymakers.

Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the First International ICST Conference on Digital Business (DigiBiz 2009), hosted by City University London in London, UK. This annual event had the main objective to stimulate and disseminate research results and experimentation on future Digital Business to a wider multidisciplinary forum that would allow the participants to cross the boundaries between research and business. The scientific offering in e-business, e-commerce, and ICT in general is quite broad and spans many different research themes, involving several communities and me- odologies. The growth and dynamic nature of these research themes pose both ch- lenges and opportunities. The challenges are in having scientists and practitioners talk to each other: despite the fact that they work on similar problems they often use very different languages in terms of research tools and approaches. The opportunities on the other hand arise when scientists and practitioners engage in multidisciplinary d- cussions leading to new ideas, projects and products.

Book Description
Since the 1980s when the microfinance revolution began, much has been accomplished, but the field became more refined in the 1990s as a result of shifts in paradigms, strategies, and development practices. This volume addresses the three policy objectives that now occupy those who wish to use credit as a development tool: financial sustainability of microfinance institutions, outreach to the poor, and welfare impact. Inevitable tradeoffs exist among these objectives, and the book advances an analytical framework that assists students of and experts in microfinance to identify the tradeoffs and synergies at the institutional level and in the policy environment. The book features a wealth of empirical data and innovative analytical studies, and critically discusses the role of public support for microfinance institutions (MFIs) in light of the social costs and benefits generated by such financial systems. The book is organized into five parts. The first discusses the demand for and access to financial services by the poor, emphasizing that demand-oriented, pro-poor financial services are crucial in reaching the poor. The second is concerned with two of the criteria used to evaluate MFIsoutreach and financial sustainability. The third features innovative econometric studies seeking to evaluate the impact of MFIs at the household level. The fourth looks at the role of both public- and private-sector institutions in developing sustainable financial systems. And the fifth summarizes implications for policy and research. Given the lack of sound, empirical literature on microfinance, this volume is sure to advance knowledge and research methodology in the field.

Book Description
Around the world, a revolution is occurring in finance for low-income people. The microfinance revolution is delivering financial services to the economically active poor on a large scale through competing, financially self-sufficient institutions. In a few countries this has already happened; in others it is under way. The emerging microfinance industry has profound implications for social and economic development. For the first time in history, capital is well on its way to being democratized. 'The Microfinance Revolution', in three volumes, is aimed at a diverse readership - economists, bankers, policymakers, donors, and social scientists; microfinance practitioners and specialists in local finance and rural and urban development; and members of the general public interested in development. This first volume, 'Sustainable Finance for the Poor', focuses on the shift from government- and donor-subsidized credit systems to self-sufficient microfinance institutions providing voluntary savings and credit services.
