The Evolution of Irish Nationalist Politics

The Evolution of Irish Nationalist Politics PDF Author: Tom Garvin
Publisher: Gill & Macmillan Ltd
ISBN: 071716389X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
Professor Tom Garvin's classic work studies the growth of nationalism in Ireland from the middle of the eighteenth century to modern times. It traces the continuity of tradition from earlier organisations, such as the United Irishmen and the agrarian Ribbonmen of the eighteenth century, through the followers of Daniel O'Connell, the Fenians and the Land League in the nineteenth century to the Irish political parties of today, including Sinn Féin, Fianna Fáil, Labour Party and Fine Gael. The dual nature of Irish nationalism is shown in sharp focus. Despite the secular and liberal leanings of many Irish leaders and theoreticians, their followers were frequently sectarian and conservative in social outlook. This book demonstrates how this dual legacy has influenced the politics of modern Ireland. Arthur Griffith and the Advanced-nationalist Press, Ireland, 1900-1922 PDF Author: Virginia E. Glandon
Publisher: Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 348

Book Description
This book focuses upon the role of Arthur Griffith, Ireland's controversial journalist-statesman, and his fellow journalists in the context of the advanced-nationalist press, during the Irish Renaissance: 1900-1922. It evaluates the contributions to the national cause of Griffith and others and contrasts their goals for Ireland, as seen in their newspapers. It reveals the great diversity of opinion among advanced nationalists - a diversity which precluded a united front as they ought to win freedom from English rule. It assesses Griffith's long struggle, first as a journalist and later as a statesman, to unite the Irish behind his plan for an independent Irish state - and why he failed to hold the new nation together as head of its provisional Government in 1922. An index of Irish newspapers which circulated in Ireland during the period surveyed is included.
