Book Description
Written by a senior Indian diplomat who has until recently also served as Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General, this book provides a unique and far-reaching exploration of the British Commonwealth, and its impact since the second World War on the process of Britain adjusting to a world without Empire. Whither the Commonwealth now? What is its record of achievement; what are the benefits of membership to countries in terms of collective political influence, trade, investment, aid, travel and education? Can any practical good be envisaged for this nearly moribund post-colonial organization? Britain, which brought the association into being and is central to it, would have to play a key part in determining its future. But in coming to such decisions, the British Government faces great problems of perception, both from the Monarchy and the British public.

Category : Political Science

Book Description
Excerpt from The British Commonwealth of Nations: A Study of Its Past and Future Development The problems of government presented by the British Empire fall roughly into three great categories: (I) problems of national government, (2) problems of imperial government, (3) problems of international government. Into the first category fall questions centring in and chiefly concerning some one member of the group of five self-governing States, namely, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. Into the second category fall questions arising out of the relationships between these self-governing States and their dependencies (e.g., as between the United Kingdom and India, or the Crown Colonies, Protectorates, Mandated Territories, etc.; or as between Australia and Papua, or New Zealand and Samoa, or South Africa and late German South-West Africa). Into the third category fall questions arising out of the mutual relationships of the group of five States already mentioned. It is with this third category, the problem of international government presented by the relationships between the Dominions and the United Kingdom, that this book is mainly concerned. Its aim is to trace the rise of this problem, to give a critical account of the momentous developments of the last few years, to investigate the various aspects of the problem as it faces us to-day, and to suggest the general lines along which the British Commonwealth should develop in the future, not merely in respect of its internal relations, but also in respect of its relations with the all-inclusive League of Nations. The British Commonwealth has now readied the third of the three great turning-points in its development. The first was the American Revolution, and the second the grant of a limited Responsible Government to Canada. The Rise and Fall of the British Nation

The Rise and Fall of the British Nation PDF Author: David Edgerton
Publisher: Penguin Group
ISBN: 9780141975979
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Out of a liberal, capitalist, genuinely global power of a unique kind, there arose from the 1940s a distinct British nation. This nation was committed to internal change, making it much more like the great continental powers. From the 1970s it became bound up both with the European Union and with foreign capital in new ways. David Edgerton's fascinating perspective produces refreshed understanding of everything from the nature of British politics to the performance of British industry. Packed with surprising examples and arguments, The Rise and Fall of the British Nation gives us a grown-up, unsentimental history, one which is crucial at a moment of serious reconsideration for the country and its future.
