Book Description
Excerpt from The Rhode Island Schoolmaster, 1865, Vol. 11 A boy's speech shows his breeding rather than his knowledge. It is one element of the training that he gets at home and among his fellows. As his society is polite or rude, so will his manner of talk ing be. My forty boys have all had pretty much the same schooling; but in correctness of speech they differ as much as their parents. Book Description
Excerpt from The Rhode Island Schoolmaster, 1871, Vol. 17 Among the numerous reviewers who have taken this book in hand, we regret that we cannot range ourselves with the complimentary majority, but must unreservedly assent to the strictures made by the critic in the current number of the New Englander, who demon strates by abundant citation that it contains'so many errors of fact as to render it wholly unfit for use. This condemnation is strong; but reference to the New Englander itself, will prove it to be just. Mr. Gilman's criticisms, moreover, are the old conventional ones, which, as they grew not out of intimacy with the authors criticised, are not potent to send the young student to these authors to seek original knowledge. Pre-eminently should a book on literature serve as spur and guidance to the search for other things than it contains, for of all books, such are in their nature the most ancillary. A text-book of chemistry without the experiments, is tolerable; but a text-book of Literature without a vital connection with Literature itself, is mere chaff. And in estimating as such the book of Mr. Gilman, we are jus tified by the fact that it reiterates the worn-out common places about authors, but shows not the note of self-reliant literary vigor.
