At the risk of seeming to dwell tediously long on one subject, we propose to say a little more on the necessity that those who bring up children should recognize that they have souls as well as minds. Well-meaning persons even, who are themselves deeply attached to the Church, seem unable to work themselves out of that unhappy groove of thought and treatment of the young, by which the souls of children are condemned to lie all but fallow until they come to that most perilous age when childhood is opening out into youth; and this on the plea that they are not yet old enough to understand religion. One of our Bishops told the writer some few years ago that he considered the age usually fixed by the Bishops for Confirmation to be exactly the worst that could be selected, coinciding as it does with the period when fresh temptations of every kind have just begun to assail the soul, and have found it for the most part utterly unprepared by previous discipline and training; and allParish Priests will heartily re-echo this Bishop's opinion. Habits of sin and indifference have by that time taken possession of the young soul that has not been brought up as a true child of the Church, and those habits can never be rooted out by any but dogmatic teaching. We are all familiar enough with the question How are we to retain our youth after Confirmation ? which we hear asked from all quarters in the most piteous tones. For the real solution of the question we must go further back than Confirmation. Why should you wait till Confirmation to get a hold of them ? Why don't you retain them after Baptism ? Why not from the beginning bring them up as children of the Church, to look forward to their Confirmation and First Communion, instead of letting the whole ...

The common expression that God orders all things for the best conveys the only clear idea we can have of his perfect benevolence. When it is said that the Judge of the whole earth will do right, the only intelligible meaning is that God will do that which is for the best good of his crea tures. To do right, and to do that which is for the best, are expressions which, as the people use and understand them, signify the same thing when ap plied to God, and equally so when applied to man. By the light of nature, without any revelation from God, men are led to the conviction that it is His will that all his creatures should do right; that is, that they do what is best for all concerned. And the various revelations from God, in different ages, now collected in the Bible, all teach the same great doctrine. In the widest use of the term, a man is religious just so far as his feelings and conduct are con formed to the will or laws of his Creator, as made known either by reason and experience or by rev elation. A child is trained to be religious, in this use of the term, just so far as he is educated to obey the laws of God in regard to self, to others, and to his Maker. In the first place, then, since "God" is the declared standard of perfection, and "Heaven" the supreme object of human attainment, let us free both from the falsities now so widely taught; for while these are accepted as truth, how can the true get recognition? Mark how man has manufactured a God out of himself, and a Heaven from his own earthly ambitions, values, and ideas of enjoyment. The classic gods and goddesses, in their home above the sky, were simply human beings with human characteristics, good and bad, but with superhuman activities in either direction. As the word "heaven" means the high, or what is raised - from the Anglo-Saxon verb hebben, to raise - and as the sky is raised high above the earth, it is used to represent our earthly idea of utmost height. In more primitive times, when this was supposed to be a flat world with a substantial arch overhead, it was natural that superhuman creatures should be assigned that high location. We call those more primitive people pagans, but their paganism still marks our religious teachings. In these it has been represented that above the sky is a fixed locality called Heaven, having a crowned King seated on a throne with a Son on his right, and a court, so to speak, and an angel population distinct in kind from mortals, yet having mortal shape and qualities. Wings have been added as being mortally thought needful for locomotion "up there," the monstrosity of arms and wings giving way to this requirement.
