Book Description
Excerpt from The Religious Life of London These are the considerations which lead me to speak of the Daily News Census as the first scientific attempt to discover the number of those who attend places of worship in the Metropolis. The British Weekly returns are, nevertheless, most valuable for purposes of comparison. Without them it would be impossible for us to tell whether we are advancing or retreating in the matter of social worship. On a later page it will be seen that Miss Jane T. Stoddart has dealt in detail with this question. As the value of figures depends upon the methods employed in obtaining them, I will brie y describe those adopted in the present instance. Book Description
Excerpt from Religious Life in England Of all the Christian systems, Protestantism is the one which is best suited to constitutional govern ment. On the one hand, it possesses enough of the principle of authority to shed its hallowing influence over the monarchy; and on the other, it leaves sufficient room for the liberty of thought, so as to admit the right of discussion, the principle of inde pendent enterprise, and the intervention of the country generally in the affairs of state. A Retrospect of the Religious Life of England

A Retrospect of the Religious Life of England PDF Author: John James Taylor

Book Description
Excerpt from A Retrospect of the Religious Life of England: Or, the Church, Puritanism, and Free Inquiry I have not said this, with any view of evading the censures to which, with the fairest criticism, the following pages will, I am quite aware, be justly liable, but only to protect them from the gratuitous injury of being tried by too high a standard. I offer them as little more than a sketch - exhibiting the general outline and pro minent features of the historical development of the religious life Of England. I make no preten sion to deep and original research. The facts recited or alluded to, are such as are familiar to every student of our national history. What I here present of my own, is simply the conception of those facts - the relation I have ventured to establish between them - the principles to which I have thought they might be referred - and the inferences which they have seemed to me to yield. I have wished to find out, if I could, the meaning of our religious history. Whether I have in any degree succeeded, the reader will judge. I may, however, state, that I have endeavoured to take my facts from the most authentic sources acces sible to me, and that the authorities immediately quoted, are those which I have either read or con. Life and Labour of the People in London, Vol. 7

Life and Labour of the People in London, Vol. 7 PDF Author: Charles Booth

Book Description
Excerpt from Life and Labour of the People in London, Vol. 7: Third Series: Religious Influences, Summary The organization of the Church of England is bound up with the parish System. The ground of London is cut up into ecclesiastical parishes varying greatly in size, their boundaries differing more or less from those of every other administrative area. These boundaries are recorded at Somerset House, and when the general Census is taken, the dwellers in each parish are enumerated by a special tabulation. The boundaries are also marked on maps in possession of the Archdeacons. Some of the incumbents, when issuing a report of their parish work, insert a Sketch map or a list of the streets and parts of streets included. Moreover, in most parishes some form of parochial visitation is carried out, and not infrequently every house is visited, spreading the knowledge and bring ing with it a sense of the presence of the clergy which justifies them in saying, 'the people know us; they know we stand ready to help.' Book Description
Excerpt from The London Life of Yesterday IN the following -pages I have endeavoured to produce a series of clearly defined pictures of certain notable epochs into which London History may be divided. No attempt has been made to trace consecutively or to discuss in detail the political, the social, or the religious life of the various periods dealt with. F or such a treatment of the subject the reader may be referred to the scholarly writings of Mr. Loftie and Dr. Sharpe, or to the pleasant pages of Sir Walter Besant's leisurely volumes. What I have tried to essay in this small volume is rather such a presentment of particular epochs as may serve for a background, which the reader can fill in at his leisure from works of a more ambitious and specialized character.
