The Christian Democracy

The Christian Democracy PDF Author: John Mcdowell Leavitt
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780484539654
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 404

Book Description
Excerpt from The Christian Democracy: A History of Its Suppression and Revival When we turn from State to Church we find three theories of supreme power, corresponding to mon archy, aristocracy, and democracy. Where is ec clesiastical sovereignty? Is it an autocracy in the pope? Is it an oligarchy in bishops? Is it a de mocracy of all believers, including clergy and laity, and whom we will call the people? Before answer ing these questions the three theories of ecclesias tical sovereignty should be more fully stated. I. The papal claim.-early as A. D. 496 Ge lasius asserted for himself all political and pontifical power. His successors proclaimed their right to rule the world. Centuries before Hildebrand and Innocent III and Boniface VIII this was the uni form view of Roman pontiffs as implied or expressed in the Vatican Decree of Pio Nono. The papal system is an autocracy. It vests all sovereignty in its pontiff. He is source of power and grace. These, through him'alone, flow to bishops, and from bish ops to priests, and from priests to people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Christian State

The Christian State PDF Author: Samuel Zane Batten
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780331813845
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 460

Book Description
Excerpt from The Christian State: The State, Democracy and Christianity This suggests a natural and important question: Is there any vital and necessary relation between these three great phenomena? Philosophy, we are told, is the art Of thinking things together. Is it possible for one, to think together these three great facts, the State, de mocracy, and Christianity? These questions are among the most fateful questions Of the time, and upon their right solution depend a hundred Issues in man's life and progress. Through their neglect great loss has already come, and through their wrong solution great calamity may result. But these questions have hardly come, as yet, into the foreground Of human inquiry. Aspects of these phenomena have been considered, and each Of these great facts has been studied; but so far as I am aware no one has considered each fact in its relation to the others. The inquiry before us, it is believed, has a timeliness and a value for reasons which may be briefly stated. The signs Of the times indicate that the great strug gles Of the future are to be fought within the boundaries Of the State. Current movements in human society show impending changes in our social and political institutions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Rise of Christian Democracy in Europe

The Rise of Christian Democracy in Europe PDF Author: Stathis N. Kalyvas
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 1501731416
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 314

Book Description
Although dominant in West European politics for more than a century, Christian Democratic parties remain largely unexplored and little understood. An investigation of how political identities and parties form, this book considers the origins of Christian Democratic "confessional" parties within the political context of Western Europe. Examining five countries where a successful confessional party emerged (Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Germany, and Italy) and one where it did not (France), Stathis N. Kalyvas addresses perplexing questions raised by the Christian Democratic phenomenon. How can we reconcile the religious roots of these parties with their tremendous success and resilience in secular and democratic Western Europe? Why have these parties discarded their initial principles and objectives to become secular forces governing secular societies? The author's answers reveal the way in which social and political actors make decisions based on self-interest under conditions that constrain their choices and the information they rely on—often with unintended but irrevocable consequences.Kalyvas also lays a foundation for a theory of the Christian Democratic phenomenon which would specify the conditions under which confessional parties succeed and would determine the impact of such parties, and the way they are formed, on politics and society. Drawing from political science, sociology, and history, his analysis goes beyond Christian Democracy to address issues related to the methodology of political science, the theory of party formation, the political development of Europe, the relationship between religion and politics, the construction of collective political identities, and the role of agency and contingency in politics.

Religion and Democracy

Religion and Democracy PDF Author: Samuel Byron Brittan
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780428869953
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 36

Book Description
Excerpt from Religion and Democracy: A Lecture Delivered Before the Society of Spiritualists, Assembled at Robinson Hall, New York, October 19th, 1873 They speculate in the funds of Trust Companies, take three per cent. A month, and, perhaps, at last run away with both capital and deposits. And now it appears that some people who thus devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers, are exercised about the godless character of our Constitution. They animadvert on the infidelity of such men as Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin. The Young Men's Christian Association has discovered that the founders of the Republic were ungodly men whose evil ways we must not imitate. They believe that the Lord will be well pleased to have us so amend the Constitution of the United States as to recognize his presence in the Government. They appear to discover no such recognition in the fact that we hire men to pray daily at the opening of the sessions of both Houses of Congress, and of all the State legislative assemblies in the country.
