Author's abstract: Introduction: Research has found that 30% of Athletic Trainers (ATs) experience burnout in their career. Limited literature has found the effects of burnout on ATs in the secondary school setting, though they account for 18% of the population. Objective: The aim of this investigation was to determine the relationship between burnout and personality traits in secondary school ATs. Methods: Participants included 143 ATs working in the secondary school setting and members of National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA). The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) was used to measure level of burnout. The Big Five Inventory (BFI) was used to measure one's type of personality traits. After IRB approval, the NATA was contacted to send out emails over an 8 week period. Data Analysis: Cronbach's alpha was calculated for the BFI and MBI constructs. Likert responses for the burnout scale were averaged. Pearson correlation coefficients were estimated to test the correlation of MBI and BFI. Utilizing Spearman's Rho, correlations were run to examine associations among marital status, age, race, ethnicity, and gender with BFI and MBI. Three stepwise regressions were run to determine the contributions of significant individual factors on the constructs of burnout. Results: Neuroticism was positively correlated with emotional exhaustion (EE) and depersonalization (DP), but not with personal accomplishment (PA). Conscientiousness, agreeableness, and extraversion are negatively correlated with EE. Agreeableness and conscientiousness were negatively correlated with DP. None of the personality traits were negatively correlated with PA and openness does not correlate with burnout. Further, regression analyses confirmed that personality traits predicted EE, DP, and PA. Conclusion: Our results highlight the existence of moderate levels of burnout in ATs employed in the secondary school setting. Further, participants who scored high with the BFI in extraversion, conscientiousness, and agreeableness have higher levels of EE and DP. In addition, individuals who scored high on the personality construct of neuroticism have a positive correlation with EE and DP. While it is important to have an understanding of the individual factors that may lead to burnout, it is also important to note that burnout is a multifaceted issue.

Athletic trainers (ATs) are allied health care professionals with the primary responsibilities of preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating athletic injuries amongst a physically active population (Athletic trainer, 2015). Due to the environmental demands of this occupation, several studies have been conducted to investigate how various factors may influence the careers, health, and potential burnout of these practitioners (e.g., Kania, Meyer, & Ebersole, 2009; Kahanov, Eberman, & Juzeszyn, 2013). Clinical burnout is a psychological syndrome that is identified by three factors including, "emotional and physical exhaustion, depersonalization (cynicism), and decreased sense of personal accomplishment that develop secondary to chronic, overwhelming work demands" (Maslach, Schaufeli, & Leiter, 2001, p. 402-403). The relationship between burnout and the self-determination theory constructs of motivational regulation and basic psychological needs (BPN) satisfaction have been well studied among athletes (Cresswell & Eklund, 2005b; Deci & Ryan, 1985). In order to explore these relationships among ATs, several research questions were the focus of the current study: 1) Do burnout symptoms vary over the course of a sport season and, if so, how?, 2) Do basic psychological needs satisfaction and motivation change over the course of a sport season and, if so, how?, and 3) Are changes in burnout symptoms related to changes in basic psychological needs satisfaction and motivation? To develop answers to these questions, ATs from throughout the country were recruited to participate in an online survey that consisted of a demographic questionnaire, the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ; Raedeke & Smith, 2001), the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS;Pelletier et al., 1995), and the Work Need Satisfaction Survey (WNSS; Deci, Connell, & Ryan, 1989). Participants were e-mailed three separate times throughout the fall season and at the conclusion of each survey distribution period, descriptive statistics were performed on the demographic questionnaire, ABQ, SMS, and WNSS. In addition, a Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance (RM-ANOVA) was conducted to determine if there was any significant change in the ABQ, SMS, or WNSS responses across the season. Finally, regression analyses were conducted to determine how much variance in burnout symptoms was explained by relevant demographic information as well as SMS and WNSS variables. In general, participants scored low on burnout and adequately on BPN satisfaction and self-determined motivational profiles. The ABQ variables of reduced accomplishment and devaluation demonstrated a steady increase across the study, whereas emotional exhaustion increased from T1 to T2 but decreased during T3. Furthermore, the mean score for amotivation increased while identified regulation decreased across all three time points. More interestingly, all three forms of intrinsic motivation decreased from T1 to T3 while integrated regulation and external regulation increased from T1 to T2. Finally, all of the WNSS variables decreased from T1 to T2 and increased from T2 to T3. RM-ANOVA results did not indicate any statistically significant variation in these factors over the course of the study; however, 61.1% of the variance in the T1 total burnout scores could be explained by number of days off per week, amotivation, identified regulation, and perceived autonomy. Finally, while these ATs did not score particularly high on burnout, their supervisors should be still be aware of the symptoms and treatment methods for this condition. In addition managers should also encourage ATs to take time away from work to tend to their needs. Lastly, through BPN satisfaction, more self-determined forms of motivation should develop as a result.

Task incongruence, role conflict, ambiguity, overload, and incompetency were the identified aspects of strain in ATs. The ambiguity in the athletic training profession is connected to insufficient specificity, while role conflict occurs in a situation where an individual is assigned to multiple roles at the same time. In essence, an individual's values and beliefs may not be compatible with professional job demands, causing role incongruence (the situation where description does not align with an individual's personality). Nineteen articles deeply examine the effect of role strain in athletic training students' profession. Work-family conflict is the disturbance emanating from the profession's family responsibilities, impacting their professional accomplishment. Fourteen researchers examined this problem extensively in the reviewed research articles, and it was determined to be a potential cause of burnout among athletic training students. High travel demands and long working hours are the two causes of work-family conflicts identified in the study. Besides, delayed or rescheduled games were determined to contribute to work-family conflict among the athletic trainers. The study found professional socialization and burnout among athletic training students closely related. Role revolution, gaining stability, formal preparation, envisioning the role, and organizational entry are the five essential phases of professional specialization in sports medicine.

The purpose of the study was to examine the burnout potential of certified athletic trainers (ATCs) working in the regions of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee. To determine burnout potential, the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey was used. Permission to modify the inventory was obtained from CPP, Inc. Participants for the research study were identified by searching the NATA membership directory, state athletic training websites and state licensure websites. Sixty-seven ATCs were emailed invitations to participate. Fifty surveys were completed. Of these 50, five were eliminated from statistical analysis. Therefore, 45 surveys were satisfactorily completed producing a usable return rate of 67%. Results of the study indicated that Certified Athletic Trainers in Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee reported burnout potential that is similar to other allied health professions. Both the Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization dimensions were in the average range. However, subjects did report high Personal Accomplishment scores that were statistically significantly different from other allied health professions. A significant difference was also found between males and females in the Emotional Exhaustion dimension. No differences were identified among ATCs who worked in different employment settings. The top sources of stress for the entire population were working too many hours (33), salary (30), coaches (27), family conflict (22), and lack of physical resources (18). Even when the data were sorted by gender, many of the variables remained the same. The top 5 sources of stress for female ATCs were: coaches (16), working too many hours (11), salary (12), lack of respect (9), and lack of physical resources (9). The top sources of stress for males were too many hours (22), family conflicts (19), salary (18), coaches (11), and lack of resources (9) respectively.

Burnout is a phenomenon that is well known among a myriad of professions but a universally accepted definition as well as specific cause or causes is a point for discussion among many researchers. The definition for burnout ranges from one of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization seen in individuals who are employed in human service positions, to one of an overload of stress from the organization on any individual. For this research study the definition of burnout is a combination of multiple sources that describe the basis of the research. Burnout is a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization accompanied by increased levels of administrative responsibilities, time commitment and work overload that can occur among certified athletic trainers. The rate of burnout among certified athletic trainers has been researched sparsely, yet the results that exist indicate that the rate of burnout has increased since the first published study in 1985. However, the research performed on burnout has yielded poor response rates as well as a continued lack of agreement on the definition, cause, and method in which to assess burnout and the increase in the responsibilities and expectations of certified athletic trainers since these studies were published indicate the need for further research on this phenomenon. The accreditation process and regulations set forth through CAAHEP, the continuing education responsibilities, the maintenance and guidance of athletes and coaches, and various illegal activities involving athletes and teams have increased the potential for burnout among certified athletic trainers. This research attempted to develop an instrument to determine the level of burnout among certified athletic trainers employed in the Big Ten Athletic Conference. This is a one shot descriptive study in which a census of the Big Ten was used and the instrument, the Athletic Training Burnout Inventory (ATBI), was mailed to every staff ATC following face and content validation. Internal consistency was determined through responses from certified athletic trainers at four Division I-A universities. For the actual study, multiple forms of communication were utilized to increase the response rate. In order to increase the response rate every institution that completed and returned all of the questionnaires was entered into a raffle to receive a $100 donation to their respective athletic training program. Background: Conflict, bullying, and negative workplace behavior have been a focus of the health care professions due to the negative impact on clinicians. Athletic training is no exception. Clinician-coach conflict has been highlighted in the collegiate setting, but secondary school athletic trainers' (ATs) experiences with conflict are not well understood. Purpose: To develop and validate an organizational conflict and workplace dynamic scale for secondary school ATs, and to assess level and source of conflict and pressure across various employment demographics. Study Design: Cross-sectional online survey Methods: Two separate cohorts of secondary school ATs were recruited for this study. Respondents completed an online questionnaire consisting of demographic questions, 5-point Likert scale items pertaining to organizational conflict and relationship characteristics, and quantitative measures regarding experiences with conflict and pressure. Instrument validation procedures included exploratory factor analysis (EFA) using data from cohort 1, and confirmatory factor analysis using the second dataset. Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance, Chi-square analyses, and odds ratios assessed for associations between organizational conflict measures and employment demographics. Results: A total of 1,048 ATs completed the questionnaire. EFA revealed a 5-factor structure explaining 51% of the variance in organizational conflict measures. Fit indices indicated poor fit of the data to the pre-determined model. Coaches and parents were frequently identified as sources of conflict, selected by 54% and 59% of respondents, respectively. Relationships between employment demographics and organizational conflict measures were negligible (Cramer's V Conclusions: Secondary school ATs reported experiencing pressure from and conflict with the individuals they interact with as part of their job, independent of employment type and status. Conflict in the workplace negatively impacts interpersonal relationships, job satisfaction, and patient care. ATs are encouraged to establish positive, collaborative workplace environments that prioritize student-athlete health and safety above all else. Key Words: interpersonal conflict.
