Excerpt from The Register of John De Grandisson, Bishop of Exeter (A. D. 1327-1369), Vol. 1: 1327-1330; With Some Account of the Episcopate of James De Berkley (A. D. 1327) Meanwhile the King had taken alarm. He was, of course, anxious to sustain the Election, and disposed to resent an action which might prove injurious to Berkeley, to whom he was attached. And he wrote to the Pope, from Kenilworth, on the 18th of December, representing to him that the Canons of Exeter, having, according to antient custom, sought and obtained his Licence, had elected Berkeley, and that he had given his Royal Assent to the said Election. Enlarging on the merits of the bishop-elect, his great learning, noble birth, blameless life, and conspicuous prudence, he besought the Pope to ratify the Election adding that, if there were any question of Reservation, be trusted that he would not insist on his claim with rigour, but would suffer things to take their course. The Cathedrals of Great Britain
Author: P. H. Ditchfield
Publisher: DigiCat
ISBN:
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 302
Book Description
The Cathedrals of Great Britain is a work by P. H. Ditchfield. It delves into the architecture and history of British cathedrals. Excerpt: "In our cathedrals we have endless varieties of plan, construction, style and adornment, as well as in the associations connected with their histories. They derive their name from the Latin word Cathedra (Greek, [Greek: Kathedra]), signifying a seat, a cathedral church being that particular church of the diocese where the bishop's seat or throne is placed. If this church belonged to a monastery it was served by the monks, but many of our cathedrals were in the hands of secular canons, who were not monks, and should not be confused with the "regular" clergy."
