Book Description
Excerpt from The Reformation and Anti-Reformation in Bohemia The punishments which had been inflicted upon the Protestants in Bohemia, after their subjugation by Ferdinand, were certainly not altogether on ac count of their religion; much was caused by political animosity, and more by the hatred of the R0 manists to that spirit of patriotism and zeal for the constitution of the kingdom which the Protestants had so decidedly exhibited. The determination, however, of the Emperor and King, Ferdinand II. Was now to bring back the whole of Bohemia to the faith of Rome. We will not dispute his motives while engaged in accomplishing this work. Experience seems to have taught him, that all the mischief had arisen from disagreement in matters of faith. His priest-ridden mind was probably influenced by such sugges tions as the following -in the fifteenth century, at the time of John Hus all the disturbance, hatred. Book Description
Excerpt from The Counter-Reformation IT is not always easy to define the correct use of even so well-worn a phrase as the counter-reformation.' I have, however, done my best to suggest such a definition in the brief Synopsis which I have prefixed to the following Essay, and which will perhaps under the circumstances not be regarded as altogether super fluons. Of the movement known under this name, I can hardly hope in the following sketch to have indicated more than the chief aspects, avoiding, as I very sincerely trust, at all events the worst of the pit falls in the ground traversed. Religious partisanship, deplorable as it is in elaborate narratives, would be unbearable in a mere summary. Excerpt from Disquisitions on the Antipapal Spirit Which Produced the Reformation, Vol. 1 of 2: Its Secret Influence on the Literature of Europe in General, and of Italy in Particular I AM aware that the arrangement of the following work will be censured by many as faulty and, whatever may be its merits, such undoubtedly is, in some degree, the case; but, while I candidly confess this, I justify myself by pointing out the causes which have produced it. Category : History
Languages : en

Book Description
Anarchy followed the Hussite Revolution in Bohemia until George of Podebrady was elected king. Professor Heymann shows how the Roman Catholic Church failed to dislodge George from his royal authority, and how the Bohemian king prevented the destruction of the Czech reformation, enabling it to influence, to an extent not fully appreciated, the development of European reform ideas up to the age of the German and Swiss Reformation. Book Description
Excerpt from The Council of Constance: And the War in Bohemia; Published Under the Direction of the Committee of General Literature and Education, Appointed by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge Great events are Of slow production, as well as, consequently, of rare occurrence. That great work of Providence, the Reformation, was not effected at Once, nor brought forth without preparative and painful throes. Luther's and Cranmer's Reforma tion, though, when viewed as one, embracing all we popularly mean by the word, was neither the only nor the first Reformation: it indeed towers SO high, and. Looms so broadly on the eye of imagi nation, that we are apt to overlook both the re moter progressive heights which lead up to it, and the basis of gradual inquiry and heroic self-sacri fice for the truth on which it rests.
