The Reformation and Anti-Reformation in Bohemia (Classic Reprint)
Author: Christian Adolph Pescheck
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331853275
Category : Religion

Pages : 454
Book Description
Excerpt from The Reformation and Anti-Reformation in Bohemia The punishments which had been inflicted upon the Protestants in Bohemia, after their subjugation by Ferdinand, were certainly not altogether on account of their religion; much was caused by political animosity, and more by the hatred of the Romanists to that spirit of patriotism and zeal for the constitution of the kingdom which the Protestants had so decidedly exhibited. The determination, however, of the Emperor and King, Ferdinand II. was now to bring back the whole of Bohemia to the faith of Rome. We will not dispute his motives while engaged in accomplishing this work. Experience seems to have taught him, that all the mischief had arisen from disagreement in matters of faith. The Magnificent Ride
Author: Thomas A. Fudge
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351886339
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 319
Book Description
The Magnificent Ride examines the social and religious dimensions of the Hussite revolutionary movement in 15th-century Bohemia. It argues that ’the magnificent ride’ was, in fact, the first reformation, and not merely a precursor to the reformations of the 16th century. The religious revival which had begun in Prague in the later middle ages reached its zenith in the period between Jan Hus and the Council of Basel. This book reconstructs the Hussite myth and shows how that myth evolved into the historical phenomenon of heresy. Acts of heretical practice in Bohemia, condemnation of Jan Hus, defiance of ecclesiastical authority and attempts by the official church to deal with the dissenters are fascinating chapters in the history of late medieval Europe.
