Book Description
Excerpt from The Reformation and Anti-Reformation in Bohemia The punishments which had been inflicted upon the Protestants in Bohemia, after their subjugation by Ferdinand, were certainly not altogether on account of their religion; much was caused by political animosity, and more by the hatred of the Romanists to that spirit of patriotism and zeal for the constitution of the kingdom which the Protestants had so decidedly exhibited. The determination, however, of the Emperor and King, Ferdinand II. was now to bring back the whole of Bohemia to the faith of Rome. We will not dispute his motives while engaged in accomplishing this work. Experience seems to have taught him, that all the mischief had arisen from disagreement in matters of faith. Book Description
Excerpt from The Counter-Reformation It is not always easy to define the correct use of even so well-worn a phrase as 'the Counter-Reformation.' I have, however, done my best to suggest such a definition in the brief" Synopsis which I have prefixed to the following Essay, and which will perhaps under the circumstances not be regarded as altogether superfluous. Of the movement known under this name, I can hardly hope in the following sketch to have indicated more than the chief aspects, avoiding, as I very sincerely trust, at all events the worst of the pitfalls in the ground traversed. Religious partisanship, deplorable as it is in elaborate narratives, would be unbearable in a mere summary. As is well known, the characteristic powers of Ranke's genius as a historian were never exercised more conspicuously than in tracing the co-operation of religions and political purposes and motives in the period of the Catholic Reaction. Besides his History of the Popes, his French History - perhaps the most, finished of all his great works - will from this point of view always remain invaluable to the student. Book Description
Excerpt from Church History, Vol. 3 of 3 The Jesuit counter-reformation 151) was eminently suc cessful during the first decades of the century in Bohemia. The nvestphalian Peace restrained its violence, but did not prevent secret machinations and the open exercise of all conceivable arts of seduction. Next to the conversion of Bohemia, the greatest triumph of the restoration was won in France in the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Besides such victories the Catholics were able to glory in the con version of several Protestant princes. New endeavours at union were repeatedly made, but these in every case proved as fruitless as former attempts had done. George of Bohemia

George of Bohemia PDF Author: Frederick Gotthold Heymann
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 140087758X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 692

Book Description
Anarchy followed the Hussite Revolution in Bohemia until George of Podebrady was elected king. Professor Heymann shows how the Roman Catholic Church failed to dislodge George from his royal authority, and how the Bohemian king prevented the destruction of the Czech reformation, enabling it to influence, to an extent not fully appreciated, the development of European reform ideas up to the age of the German and Swiss Reformation. Originally published in 1965. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
