The Reenactment PDF Author: Marc McKeel

ISBN: 0557583349
Category : Fiction

Pages : 266

Book Description
When worldly, no-nonsense travel agent Pius Bird attends a reenactment of the 1622 massacres near Williamsburg, Virginia, he gets an event far more realistic than he expects. The actors pull the observers into the assault, and as far as Pius can tell, it's not an act. The violence forces him and a woman he saves into the woods where they stay hidden through the night. When they return the next morning they expect to find police cars and ambulances. Instead, they come upon a new, pristine world, the year 1622, where all signs of the 21st century have disappeared. They come to believe that they have gone back in time and would have to find a way back to their old world. What follows is an adventure of escape, of staying out of Indian wars, of avoiding battles between vengeful Englishmen and Powhatans. Eventually Pius Bird learns that not all things are as they appear.

The Reenactment in Contemporary Screen Culture

The Reenactment in Contemporary Screen Culture PDF Author: Megan Carrigy
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1501359363
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
During the first decades of the 21st century, a critical re-assessment of the reenactment as a form of historical representation has taken place in the disciplines of history, art history and performance studies. Engagement with the reenactment in film and media studies has come almost entirely from the field of documentary studies and has focused almost exclusively on non-fiction, even though reenactments are being employed across fiction and non-fiction film and television genres. Working with an eclectic collection of case studies from Milk, Monster, Boys Don't Cry, and The Battle of Orgreave to CSI and the video of police assaulting Rodney King, this book examines the relationship between the status of theatricality in the reenactment and the ways in which its relationships to reference are performed. Carrigy shows that while the practice of reenactment predates technically reproducible media, and continues to exist in both live and mediated forms, it has been thoroughly transformed through its incorporation within forms of technical media.

Reenactments

Reenactments PDF Author: Hai-Dang Phan
Publisher: Sarabande Books
ISBN: 194644829X
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 81

Book Description
In Reenactments, poet Hai-Dang Phan explores the history, memory, and legacy of the Vietnam War from his vantage point as a second-generation Vietnamese American. Woven throughout the poems is a narrative of his family’s exodus from Vietnam that beautifully elucidates the American record of immigration, dislocation, inheritance, and ultimately hope. The poems are persuasively varied in their approach. The past and present, the remembered and imagined, all intersect at shifting angles, providing bold new perspectives. And, in a fresh move, Phan widens the lens, interspersing translations of several other contemporary Vietnamese poems to the mix. This subtle and moving debut is an important addition to the literature of immigration.

Performing Remains

Performing Remains PDF Author: Rebecca Schneider
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136979689
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 317

Book Description
'At last, the past has arrived! Performing Remains is Rebecca Schneider's authoritative statement on a major topic of interest to the field of theatre and performance studies. It extends and consolidates her pioneering contributions to the field through its interdisciplinary method, vivid writing, and stimulating polemic. Performing Remains has been eagerly awaited, and will be appreciated now and in the future for its rigorous investigations into the aesthetic and political potential of reenactments.' - Tavia Nyong'o, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University 'I have often wondered where the big, important, paradigm-changing book about re-enactment is: Schneider’s book seems to me to be that book. Her work is challenging, thoughtful and innovative and will set the agenda for study in a number of areas for the next decade.' - Jerome de Groot, University of Manchester Performing Remains is a dazzling new study exploring the role of the fake, the false and the faux in contemporary performance. Rebecca Schneider argues passionately that performance can be engaged as what remains, rather than what disappears. Across seven essays, Schneider presents a forensic and unique examination of both contemporary and historical performance, drawing on a variety of elucidating sources including the "America" plays of Linda Mussmann and Suzan-Lori Parks, performances of Marina Abramovic ́ and Allison Smith, and the continued popular appeal of Civil War reenactments. Performing Remains questions the importance of representation throughout history and today, while boldly reassessing the ritual value of failure to recapture the past and recreate the "original."

Historical Reenactment

Historical Reenactment PDF Author: Mario Carretero
Publisher: Berghahn Books
ISBN: 1800735413
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
Long dismissed as the domain of hobbyists and obsessives, historical reenactment—the dramatization of past events using costumed actors and historical props—has only in recent years attracted serious attention from scholars. Drawing on examples from around the world, Historical Reenactment offers a fascinating, interdisciplinary exploration of this cultural phenomenon. With particular attention to reenactment’s social and pedagogical dimensions, it develops a robust definition of what the practice constitutes, considers what methodological approaches are most appropriate, and places it alongside museums and memorial sites as an object of analysis.

This Is the Night Our House Will Catch Fire: A Memoir

This Is the Night Our House Will Catch Fire: A Memoir PDF Author: Nick Flynn
Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company
ISBN: 1324005556
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
A searing memoir on how childhood spills into parenthood from the critically acclaimed author of Another Bullshit Night in Suck City. When Nick Flynn was seven years old, his mother set fire to their house. The event loomed large in his imagination for years, but it’s only after having a child of his own that he understands why. He returns with his young daughter to the landscape of his youth, reflecting on how his feral childhood has him still in its reins, and forms his memories into lyrical bedtime stories populated by the both sinister and wounded Mister Mann. With the spare lyricism and dark irony of his classic, Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, Flynn excavates the terrain of his traumatic upbringing and his mother’s suicide. This Is the Night Our House Will Catch Fire unravels the story of the fire that Flynn had to escape, and the ways in which, as an adult, he has carried that fire with him until it threatens to burn down his own house. Here Nick confronts his failings with fierce candor, even as they threaten to tear his family apart. His marriage in crisis, Flynn seeks answers from his therapist, who tells him he has “the ethics of a drowning man.” This Is the Night Our House Will Catch Fire takes us on the journey of a man struggling to hold himself together in prose that is raw and moving, sharp-edged and wry. Alternating literary analysis and philosophy with intimate memoir, Flynn probes his deepest ethical dilemmas.

Man of War

Man of War PDF Author: Charlie Schroeder
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 0142196800
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
It's the middle of a heat wave, and Charlie Schroeder is dressed in heavy clothing and struggling to row a replica eighteenth-century bateau down the St. Lawrence River. Why? Months earlier, Schroeder realized he knew almost nothing about history. But he wanted to learn, so the actor spent a year reenacting it. This book is Schroeder's account of the time he spent chasing Celts in Arkansas, raiding a Viet Cong village in Virginia, and flirting with frostbite en route to "Stalingrad" in Colorado. Along the way, he illuminates just how much the past can teach us about the present.--From back cover.
