That the pastor/priests admit before God, conscience, and congregation that their lives have had nothing at all to do with New Testament Christianity, and because of that America''s evangelicals remain either poisoned or famished. Yet inspite of the nauseating conformity of religious leadership, the book remarks upon America''s more authentic expressions of servant leadership. It moves with the Biblical tide, that leniency is given for those who earnestly desire it, propelling one into the restlessness of faith (Luther), having remorse/confession/repentence as good shepherds. My Little Share of Authority The presbyter Vigilantius, firmly, though ineffectually, withstood the superstition of the monks, relics, saints, fasts, etc. for which Jerome compares him to the Hydra, Cerberus, the Centaurs, etc. and considers him only as the organ of the Demon (Penguin p. 355). I have never once said that I am a New Testament Christian, only that I am learning to become one, and there remains a wide gulf between it and me. If American pastors and priests want to contend they are more Christian than I am, then let them, and let Eternity decide the matter. But I hold a higher authority than they in two respects, in Socratic honesty and the Pauline. That I do not gloss over what the New Testament teaches (the pastors have, on the other hand, in front of their congregations, dedicated themselves to promulgating it), thus have not finessed the New Testament, but they did to pack their buildings. Of course my portrayal has not quite given me a promising career within the established American church. Yet I have freely chosen, voluntarily and as an adult, to live out certain crucial aspects of New Testament teaching, though it is equally true that I am really spineless, demonstrated by what I have left undone. This differs from middle class pastor/priests in four ways: 1) They will not admit and confess they are spineless 2) much of their Christian sacrifice, if any, was involuntary, a result of a difficult childhood etc. 3)What they call suffering for the truth is what the apostle Peter calls suffering for stupidity''s sake, like tax audits on large properties, being mocked for opposing reasonable birth control or ridiculed for real hypocrisy etc. 4) they purposefully confuse the suffering that is common to secular society with Christian trials, such as raising children being called the cost of discipleship, being unable to pay their high mortgages a trial of faith, etc. What I now say is boasting, I do not deny it, and may God forgive me for it. Yet I will take the risk and forge ahead with something I am compelled to do because of the condition that Christianity now finds itself in; rhetorical skill determines the cut of the Christian. While Dobson settles comfortably into a Colorado ski resort to write a new book (which evangelical readers await like the town band to provide background music to its arrival), I work a tent-making job (while Dobson collects a multi-million dollar settlement from Focus on the Family) in Eastern Europe, eking out a few minutes every day to try and get out another point of view. This while striving to save enough to give to the poor churches, personally and face-to-face, of the Middle East, Africa and India. I am quite prepared to measure the New Testament Christianity I have been led to pursue and for which I take no credit (like a wounded man on a horse that carries him home) against any middle class, media or megachurch pastor/priest in America. It boils down to who you are going to believe, which is of eternal concern for my reader. For if one chooses to follow a pastor whose whole life has been one long clever deception, then the reader will have died as he lived, a dupe who relied on his pastor''s false authority. Then he will indeed have a poor excuse before the Eternal. In my early twenties I recognized something was vitally wrong with the American church, though the thoughts were vague and inarticulate. In no way did I ever conceive of them as a revelation, but I knew I had to do something to balance the intellectual emphasis of the seminary with the Biblical reality of practicing one''s faith, which in my case meant teaching in a low-in-come neighborhood in east Los Angeles. There followed a course taught by a house church pastor where we looked at the New Testament demands of simplicity and a life lived within walking distance of each other. We knew these realities would help to drive out the two main idols within the American church, avarice (as seen through its holdings) and power (as seen by its silent and occasionally not so silent approval of evangelicals steering American politics). Then I saw my life''s task standing before me, to make Christianity as clear as possible by exposing the crimes of a false church leadership and by first making the gospel apparent to myself. This I could do by striving to live it out among those whom Christ spent the majority of his time with, from the poor to the common man to the sincere.
