The Russian revolution is one of the vital issues of the world today. The political revolt, presenting, as it does, so many unique and dramatic developments, tends to distract the attention of the world from the broader, deeper, and certainly not less important, phases of the movement which are found in the social and eco nomic upheaval. The working out of these forces political, social, economic - in one stupendous move ment, constitutes one of the great revolutions of history. Revolution implies absolute change. Thether civil war, or intense parliamentary struggle, or both, is the method of accomplishment, is of small consequence. The ulti mate outcome is the Same. The present movement of the Russian people toward a changed condition of life is but the manifestation of underlying forces of history and destiny to which all nations must yield. Revolution in Russia during the first quarter of the twentieth century is as inevitable as the bursting of a Pelee or a Vesuvius. Book Description
Kellogg Durland (1881-1911) was an American social worker and writer born in New York City. In 1901 he worked for four months as a coal miner in Scotland to study mining conditions at first-hand, publishing Among the Fife Miners in 1904. From 1904-05 he became an assistant at University Settlement, New York, and went on to give lectures on events and conditions in Russia after spending a year in that country gathering information. His book The Red Reign: The True Story of an Adventurous Year in Russia was published in 1908. Copiously illustrated with photographs throughout, many taken by the author himself, the book provides an in-depth analysis of the conditions Durland witnessed at first-hand during his lengthy stay in Russia at a time of increasing civil unrest prior to WWI and the Bolshevik Revolution. He was also the author of Royal Romances of To-day (1911) telling the stories of the courtship and marriage of Alexandra, wife of Tsar Nicholas II, Queen Elena of Italy, and Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain. In November 1911 Durland committed suicide by taking cyanide of potassium.

An Intellectual History of Terror

An Intellectual History of Terror PDF Author: Mikkel Thorup
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136946799
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 293

Book Description
This book investigates terrorism and anti-terrorism as related and interacting phenomena, undertaking a simultaneous reading of terrorist and statist ideologists in order to reconstruct the 'deadly dialogue' between them. This work investigates an extensive array of violent phenomena and actors, trying to broaden the scope and ambition of the history of terrorism studies. It combines an extensive reading of state and terrorist discourse from various sources with theorizing of modernity's political, institutional and ideological development, forms of violence, and its guiding images of self and other, order and disorder. Chapters explore groups of actors (terrorists, pirates, partisans, anarchists, Islamists, neo-Nazis, revolutionaries, soldiers, politicians, scholars) as well as a broad empirical source material, and combine them into a narrative of how our ideas and concepts of state, terrorism, order, disorder, territory, violence and others came about and influence the struggle between the modern state and its challengers. The main focus is on how the state and its challengers have conceptualized and legitimated themselves, defended their existence and, most importantly, their violence. In doing so, the book situates terrorism and anti-terrorism within modernity's grander history of state, war, ideology and violence. This book will be of much interest to students of critical terrorism studies, political violence, sociology, philosophy, and Security Studies/IR in genera Mikkel Thorup is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Philosophy and the History of Ideas, University of Aarhus, Denmark.
