Book Description
Many books have been written about the Big Bang and how the universe became the way it is today. But what about the future of the universe? What will happen to the Earth and solar system? What about our galaxy? Indeed, how long will the universe as we recognize it survive? The Future of the Universe takes the reader on a journey through space and time, beginning with a long look at the Earth and solar system, voyaging to the outermost galaxies, and finishing with speculations about the life and fate of the entire universe.

Astrophysics of Red Supergiants

Astrophysics of Red Supergiants PDF Author: Emily M. Levesque
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780750313292
Category : Astrophysics
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
"Astrophysics of Red Supergiants' is the first book of its kind devoted to our current knowledge of red supergiant stars, a key evolutionary phase that is critical to our larger understanding of massive stars. It provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental physical properties of red supergiants, their evolution, and their extragalactic and cosmological applications. It serves as a reference for researchers from a broad range of fields (including stellar astrophysics, supernovae, and high-redshift galaxies) who are interested in red supergiants as extreme stages of stellar evolution, dust producers, supernova progenitors, extragalactic metallicity indicators, members of massive binaries and mergers, or simply as compelling objects in their own right. The book is accessible to a range of experience levels, from graduate students up to senior researchers."--Source : résumé de l'éditeur.

Asteroseismology

Asteroseismology PDF Author: C. Aerts
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media

Pages : 872

Book Description
Understanding the stars is the bedrock of modern astrophysics. Stars are the source of life. The chemical enrichment of our Milky Way and of the Universe withallelementsheavierthanlithiumoriginatesintheinteriorsofstars.Stars arethe tracersofthe dynamics ofthe Universe, gravitationallyimplying much more than meets the eye. Stars ionize the interstellar medium and re-ionized the early intergalactic medium. Understanding stellar structure and evolution is fundamental. While stellar structure and evolution are understood in general terms, we lack important physical ingredients, despite extensive research during recent decades.Classicalspectroscopy, photometry, astrometryandinterferometryof stars have traditionally been used as observational constraints to deduce the internal stellar physics. Unfortunately, these types of observations only allow the tuning of the basic common physics laws under stellar conditions with relatively poor precision. The situation is even more worrisome for unknown aspects of the physics and dynamics in stars. These are usually dealt with by using parameterised descriptions of, e.g., the treatments of convection, rotation, angularmomentumtransport, theequationofstate, atomicdi?usion andsettlingofelements,magneto-hydrodynamicalprocesses,andmore.There is a dearth of observational constraints on these processes, thus solar values areoftenassignedtothem.Yetitishardtoimaginethatonesetofparameters is appropriate for the vast range of stars.

Book Description
Like any other genuine intergalactic space hero delivering sixteen million bags of first-class mail to the outer edges of the universe, Commander Zack Proton needed a potty break. But when Zack opened the wrong door and tumbled out of his ship, he found himself all alone in the inky depths of space...until he was picked up by Omega Chimp, the last chimpanzee sent into space. Zack was hoping to be found by a space hero like himself, but a chimp with a banana generator is going to have to do. While searching for his lost ship, Zack and Omega square off with the evilest, nastiest, most horriblest space giant ever to walk the spaceways -- Big Large! Can Zack manage without his decoder ring? Does Omega Chimp have anything useful aboard his ship besides bananas? And how will a hunk of junk that's bigger than a breadbox, smaller than an ostrich, and looks like a chubby fire hydrant save the day?

Red Gold

Red Gold PDF Author: Jennifer E. Telesca
Publisher: U of Minnesota Press
ISBN: 1452962332
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
Illuminating the conditions for global governance to have precipitated the devastating decline of one of the ocean’s most majestic creatures The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) is the world’s foremost organization for managing and conserving tunas, seabirds, turtles, and sharks traversing international waters. Founded by treaty in 1969, ICCAT stewards what has become under its tenure one of the planet’s most prominent endangered fish: the Atlantic bluefin tuna. Called “red gold” by industry insiders for the exorbitant price her ruby-colored flesh commands in the sushi economy, the giant bluefin tuna has crashed in size and number under ICCAT’s custodianship. With regulations to conserve these sea creatures in place for half a century, why have so many big bluefin tuna vanished from the Atlantic? In Red Gold, Jennifer E. Telesca offers unparalleled access to ICCAT to show that the institution has faithfully executed the task assigned it by international law: to fish as hard as possible to grow national economies. ICCAT manages the bluefin not to protect them but to secure export markets for commodity empires—and, as a result, has become complicit in their extermination. The decades of regulating fish as commodities have had disastrous consequences. Amid the mass extinction of all kinds of life today, Red Gold reacquaints the reader with the splendors of the giant bluefin tuna through vignettes that defy technoscientific and market rationales. Ultimately, this book shows, changing the way people value marine life must come not only from reforming ICCAT but from transforming the dominant culture that consents to this slaughter.
