The Ranch

The Ranch PDF Author: Chris Peck
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1493111817
Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
This book and its author grew up together. The 1960s in America transformed everyone who lived through this amazing time in our nation’s history. Civil rights laws were fought for and passed; women began to find a voice and break down barriers. Immigrant workers and Native Americans raised their voices. We became a smarter, more aware nation—for a while. The Vietnam War became a symbol of those times. The music helped define us, and the illegal use of banned substances gave some of us the temporary courage to face the insanity head-on. The ranch is a mostly accurate first-person account of one young man’s strange journey from gung ho high school student to landing himself in the middle of the “ world’s most dangerous navy.” Our hero slowly evolves into a war resister who gets into the exact amount of trouble to get assigned to a horse ranch in the U.S. Navy. There are a few rants that I included for mostly therapeutic reasons and several well-chosen fits of profanity that help to paint the military experience as it was and, I believe, still is to this day. I consider this book funny and thoughtful, but then I’m severely prejudiced. I wrote this back cover account myself because George Carlin and Joseph Heller had busy schedules in the afterlife, and I don’t know Sara Silverman—yet. The Ranch is my first attempt at being considered a writer. I have plans to write a second book, which will document my experience as a telephone man in Northeast New Jersey. There will be plenty of danger, sex, drugs, and rock and roll with a hint of The Sopranos, so don’t spoil my enthusiasm and buy this book. Thanks, America.

Invited Killers PDF Author: John P. Ludington
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 0595011551
Category : Law

Pages : 222

Book Description
Book Description: This is the story of the most dramatic legal development of the last one hundred years—the growing liability of real property owners or occupiers to crime victims. The Invited Killers of the title are "invited" by lax premises security, and they are not only killers but predators of every kind, including rapists, abductors, and armed robbers. The heroes of the book are the lawyers who try the cases when the criminals sue the property owners for their injuries. The cases are surveyed, but the main cases are discussed in detail, with all the courtroom thrust and parry that led to the decisions forming this volatile area of law. Written by a veteran legal observer and researcher, this book is rich in detail, broad in scope, prescient as to the future, highly readable, and full of surprises! John P. Ludington has written extensively about premises liability in the 3-volume Premises Liability 2d and the monthly Premises Liability Alert, and has edited books by leading lawyers like Jacob Stein, who represented Monica Lewinsky, and legendary Chicago litigator Jerome

The Face of a Naked Lady

The Face of a Naked Lady PDF Author: Michael Rips
Publisher: HMH
ISBN: 0547975066
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 201

Book Description
A son uncovers the remarkable secret life of his midwestern father—and his Nebraska city—in this “beguiling [and] deeply unusual” memoir (The Boston Sunday Globe). Nick Rips’s son had always known him as a conservative midwesterner, dedicated, affable, bland to the point of invisibility. Upon his father’s death, however, Michael Rips returned to his Omaha family home to discover a hidden portfolio of paintings—all done by his father, all of a naked black woman. His solid Republican father, Michael would eventually discover, had an interesting past and another side to his personality. Raised in one of Omaha’s most famous brothels, Nick had insisted on hiring a collection of social misfits to work in his eyeglass factory—and had once showed up in his son’s high school principal’s office in pajamas. As Michael searches for the woman in the paintings, he meets, among others, an African American detective who swears by the clairvoyant powers of a Mind Machine, a homeless man with five million dollars in the bank, an underwear auctioneer, and a flying trapeze artist on her last sublime ride. Ultimately, in his investigations through his Nebraska hometown, he will discover the mysterious woman—as well as a father he never knew, and a profound sense that all around us the miraculous permeates the everyday. “Writing with similar pain and urgency as Nick Flynn in Another Bullshit Night in Suck City and August Kleinzahler in Cutty, One Rock, Rips’ terse, flinty syntax perfectly embodies the hard-boiled nature of this nearly surreal true-life tale.” —Booklist “An amazing, beautiful book—a study of a certain family in a certain place at a certain time that gives us, in stunning shorthand, the reality of America.” —Joan Didion, author of The White Album “At once a lyrical family portrait, a philosophical inquiry, a bittersweet evocation of a lost time and place, and an enthralling domestic mystery.” —Susan Orlean, author of The Orchid Thief “Quirky, funny, moving, and immensely readable . . . a brilliantly observed story about place, family, and race in America.” —Randall Kennedy
