Book Description
Excerpt from The Rabbinate of the Great Synagogue, London, From 1756-1842 The following pages are an attempt to reconstruct the modern history of the Ashkenazi Community in London on the basis of almost entirely new material, hidden hitherto in volumes of Hebrew manuscripts. The period dealt with is comparatively recent. And may be regarded by many as too recent. The idea that only earlier history is worth reconstruction has taken hold of most of our eminent Jewish scholars, and may account for the fact that the manuscripts used by me were not taken note of before. The Jewish Eighteenth Century, Volume 2

The Jewish Eighteenth Century, Volume 2 PDF Author: Shmuel Feiner
Publisher: Indiana University Press
ISBN: 0253065151
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 646

Book Description
The second volume of Shmuel Feiner's The Jewish Eighteenth Century covers the period from 1750 to 1800, a time of even greater upheavals, tensions, and challenges. The changes that began to emerge at the beginning of the eighteenth century matured in the second half. Feiner explores how political considerations of the Jewish minority throughout Europe began to expand. From the "Jew Bill" of 1753 in Britain, to the surprising series of decrees issued by Joseph II of Austria that expanded tolerance in Austria, to the debate over emancipation in revolutionary France, the lives of the Jews of Europe became ever more intertwined with the political, social, economic, and cultural fabric of the continent. The Jewish Eighteenth Century, Volume 2: A European Biography, 1750-1800 concludes Feiner's landmark study of the history of Jewish populations in the period. By combining an examination of the broad and profound processes that changed the familiar world from the ground up with personal experiences of those who lived through them, it allows for a unique explanation of these momentous events.

The Last Anglo-Jewish Gentleman

The Last Anglo-Jewish Gentleman PDF Author: Todd M. Endelman
Publisher: Indiana University Press
ISBN: 0253061776
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 373

Book Description
Redcliffe Salaman (1874–1955) was an English Jew of many facets: a country gentleman, a physician, a biologist who pioneered the breeding of blight-free strains of potatoes, a Jewish nationalist, and a race scientist. A well-known figure in his own time, The Last Anglo-Jewish Gentleman restores him to his place in the history of British science and the British Jewish community. Redcliffe Salaman was also a leading figure in the Anglo-Jewish community in the 20th century. At the same time, he was also an incisive critic of the changing character of that community. His groundbreaking book, The History and Social Influence of the Potato, first published in 1949 and in print ever since, is a classic in social history. His wife Nina was a feminist, poet, essayist, and translator of medieval Hebrew poetry. She was the first (and to this day, only) woman to deliver a sermon in an Orthodox synagogue in Britain. The Last-Anglo Jewish Gentleman offers a compelling biography of a unique individual. It also provides insights into the life of English Jews during the late-19th and early-20th centuries and brings to light largely unknown controversies and tensions in Jewish life.
