Come have coffee with me! Let's talk about an insatiable quest for beauty and the things that come with it - things like body image issues, low self-esteem, unhealthy eating patterns, and looking to dating for our worth. This is a book for young women by a young woman. I was one of those girls who hated her reflection in the mirror and wished to God she could spend a day in the shoes of someone who was truly beautiful. I tried to do whatever it took to make myself perfect, but the quest led down a road far uglier than I had ever imagined. However, out of my brokenness I found a confidence that filled the depths of my soul and gave me a reason to walk with my head held high. I found everything I was searching for - only it wasn't to be found in beauty. Come hear my journey over a chai or latte or whatever you want, and let's talk woman to woman about how we can overcome our culture's obsession with perfection.

The Revival of Beauty

The Revival of Beauty PDF Author: Catherine Wesselinoff
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000933881
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 215

Book Description
This book provides original descriptive accounts of two schools of thought in the philosophy of beauty: the 20th-century “Anti-Aesthetic” movement and the 21st-century “Beauty Revival” movement. It also includes a positive defence of beauty as a lived experience extrapolated from Beauty-Revival position. Beauty was traditionally understood in the broadest sense as a notion that engages our sense perception and embraces everything evoked by that perception, including mental products and affective states. This book constructs and places in parallel with one another the Anti-Aesthetic and Beauty-Revival movements. In the author’s view, Anti-Aestheticism is devoted to a decisive negation of beauty—denying its importance as a philosophical notion and its significance as a lived experience. It suggests that beauty is a merely sensual experience, which can be used, at best, as a distraction from justice and, at worst, as an instrument of evil. Alternatively, the Beauty-Revival movement advances arguments for beauty as an experience that extends primarily to sensual experience, but which also calls forth mental products and cognitive and affective states evoked by that experience. After reconstructing these two positions, the author elaborates on the notion of beauty as a lived experience through three key moments which occur in the process of our experiencing beautiful objects. These moments are (a) the conditions that constitute an experience of beauty, (b) the attitudinal features most likely to lead to the experience of beauty, and (c) the results of the experience of beauty. The Revival of Beauty will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working in aesthetics, history of philosophy, and art history.

The Biology of Beauty

The Biology of Beauty PDF Author: Rachelle M. Smith
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1440849897
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 274

Book Description
This thought-provoking book examines the science behind human attractiveness—the ratios, proportions, and other factors that to a large extent dictate what we find "beautiful." It's said that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," but recent scientific research suggests that human attractiveness is much more objective than we once thought, deeply rooted in our biology and evolutionary history. For instance, facial symmetry is considered extremely attractive because it indicates good health and nutrition during the formative developmental years. This book explores these insights. Part I of The Biology of Beauty: The Science behind Human Attractiveness takes a closer look at what traits we find the most alluring and why. It discusses why attractiveness is important from an evolutionary standpoint and the advantages (and disadvantages) of being attractive. In addition to exploring these beauty "universals," it examines how beauty ideals can be shaped by factors such as culture, religion, and the media. Part II provides an in-depth analysis of individual features that contribute to attractiveness, offering scientific explanations for our preferences. The book also includes a collection of insightful sidebars that highlight beauty ideals in different parts of the world and at other times in history.
