Book Description
Excerpt from The American Quarterly Review, Vol. 16 A great political career, in an especial manner, cannot be adequately judged by contemporaries. Elevation and distance are essential to a correct survey of the proportions of a giant. They that walk under his huge legs, are either awed into astonishment at his power, or struggling against the influence of his authority. The former magnify his stature, the latter exaggerate his deformities. Neither can measure his altitude amidst the clouds with which passion may have obscured, or policy concealed it. But when the Colossus is asleep in the earth, even dwarfs may come, like the pygmies of the satirist, with their cords of thread, and bind him to gratify the curiosi ty, or minister to the instruction of their species. Book Description
Excerpt from The National Quarterly Review, Vol. 16: For December, 1867, and March, 1868 The number of portraits, then, cannot be regarded as a safe criterion of the esteem in which an Athenian author was held by his contemporaries. Human nature being the same at all times, one was doubtless as liable to be deceived in enter ing an Athenian studio in the time Of Menander, as he would be today in entering a photograph gallery in Broadway. In the latter he would find twenty authors of the lowest or worst class - mere pretenders - for one of the higher or even third class - one who is entitled to be ranked in any class. Scrutiny: A Quarterly Review Vol. 16 1949: Volume 16, 1949

Scrutiny: A Quarterly Review Vol. 16 1949: Volume 16, 1949 PDF Author: F. R. Leavis
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 0521062691
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Scrutiny was first issued quarterly from Cambridge between 1932 and 1953, the principal editor throughout being Dr Leavis. It is now recognized as a formative influence on English intellectual and cultural life worthy to rank with the great reviews of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This reissue is of the 1963 combined set, including a final volume containing an important Retrospect by Dr Leavis and a substantial analytical index. Scrutiny offers an almost complete critical history of English literature from Chaucer to the mid-twentieth century. Medieval literature, Shakespeare, the seventeenth-century poets, Pope, Dryden, Johnson, the great romantics, the Victorians, and nearly all the important modern writers are seriously examined. Many of the articles have become classics, and resulted in revisions of previously accepted views. An important feature of Scrutiny, still of great interest, is the book review section, where many of the important books of the time, and some of the pretentious ones too, were reviewed as they appeared.
