The theory of generating cycles em braces three fundamental inquiries: first, as to the existence of generating cycles, their length, amplitudes and phases; second, as to the ways in which the generat ing cycles work out their rhythmic efi'ects in remote phases of economic life; and third, as to the cause of generating cycles. In other essays I have dealt with the first and second of these divisions. The present paper attempts to place the cause of the eight-year generatin g cycle.
