Book Description
The Purple Palace & other Poems is the debut Poetry collection by Artist Shayna Klee. The semi-autobiographical book is divided into two parts and takes place between two countries; Part I, "is a cloud a living thing?", takes place during the Author's tumultueuse teen years with tropical Florida as a backdrop. Part II, "Inside my Shell", explores themes of transformation as the Author creates a new life for herself in Paris, France. The poems in this collection explore the surreal rollercoaster of youth, the performance of identity, being an outsider and the tension between romantic idealism and the dystopic world in which the author finds herself. Her approach to her work as a visual artist is mirrored in her poetry style, which is accompanied by all original illustrations by the Author.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Palace Beautiful, and Other Poems The Palace Beautiful. Lord Most Supreme, whose image is the man Of Reason, wedded to the vestal Truth, Teach me, beyond the mortal veil of youth, To trace Life's perfect compensating plan. Why burns the torch of morning on the hills, That catch the blazing roses of its gleams, When subtle darkness falls between the beams, And all the world with haunted shadow fills? Why blooms the dew-decoying rose of red, And sheds its fragrance in the laughing light; When weeping tempests, prison'd in a night, Are pent, to burst upon its modest head? Why scales of vernal armor clothe the tree, And hide the flutter of its singing heart, When Winter cometh, with his icy dart, To set th' imprison'd soul of Nature free? Eccentric Spaces, Hidden Histories

Eccentric Spaces, Hidden Histories PDF Author: David Bialock
Publisher: Stanford University Press
ISBN: 9780804767644
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 502

Book Description
After The Tale of Genji (c. 1000), the greatest work of classical Japanese literature is the historical narrative The Tale of the Heike (13th-14th centuries). In addition to opening up fresh perspectives on the Heike narratives, this study also draws attention to a range of problems centered on the interrelationship between narrative, ritual space, and Japan's changing views of China as they bear on depictions of the emperor's authority, warriors, and marginal population going all the way back to the Nara period. By situating the Heike in this long temporal framework, the author sheds light on a hidden history of royal authority that was entangled in Daoist and yin-yang ideas in the Nara period, practices centered on defilement in the Heian period, and Buddhist doctrines pertaining to original enlightenment in the medieval period, all of which resurface and combine in Heike's narrative world. In introducing for the first time the full range of Heike narrative to students and scholars of Japanese literature, the author argues that we must also reexamine our understanding of the literature, ritual, and culture of the Heian and Nara periods.
