Book Description
Excerpt from The Public Domain and Democracy: A Study of Social, Economic and Political Problems in the United States in Relation to Western Development It is common knowledge that its settlement and development have had tremendous influences in national life. The history of the whole country is bound up in the rapid extension of her borders and the remarkable expansion of her population. But in large movements one may lose sight of others developing at the same time. To reverse a wellknown saying: "We see so much of the forest that we fail to see the trees." Social developments and social movements have been taking place the significance of which, because of other great national affairs more evident and appreciable, is not yet fully perceived. The importance of population movements in the United States and the occupation of the Public Domain rests in the fact that they have created a condition of successive change; of social unstability; of social, economic and political restlessness; and have carried with them peculiarly vital developments in various phases of American life. No population removal of history, perhaps, has been accompanied by any more marked social phenomena than that beginning in America at the close of the Revolutionary War and continuing to the present. No movement within the range of modern times has been fraught with greater import than has this one which transplanted a portion of the roots of a vigorous people on a restricted sea-board to the wilds of a frontier which shortly teemed with life and civilization. Management for the Public Domain

Management for the Public Domain PDF Author: Stewart Ranson
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1349237876
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 311

Book Description
In this important attempt to reorient the theory and practice of public management, Stewart Ranson and John Stewart argue that public organisations must be analysed in terms of the distinctive values, purposes, tasks and conditions of the public domain. They show how it is only on this basis that they can meet the needs of citizens in a mature democracy and support the processes of a learning society.

The Market or the Public Domain

The Market or the Public Domain PDF Author: Daniel Drache
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134576765
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 412

Book Description
Examining the powerful idea of the return, reconstitution and redeployment of the public domain in a post-Seattle and post-Washington consensus world order, this innovative book is the most forward-looking and comprehensive examination of the need to rethink the tenants of global free trade. In the past two decades, countries have focused on broadening and guaranteeing market access, and as the pendulum swings back for the market, the issue of investing in the public domain becomes a priority. The authors believe that devising new institutions of governance for a globalizing world requires fundamental change nationally and internationally. They argue that new public spaces, places and services are required to strengthen democracy and create sanctuaries in society where the market mechanism cannot reach. The public domain is an incipient concept that enables states to reduce the intrusiveness of markets and at the same time develop a strong national performance to reduce the inequality and social exclusion in an increasingly volatile global economy. This original volume boasts an impressive list of international contributors who have demonstrated innovation and leadership in their fields. It will strongly appeal to advanced students, academics and policy makers involved in the field of global governance and international political economy.
