Book Description
Excerpt from The Psalms in the Jewish Church An apology is perhaps needed for writing a book on the Psalms a subject which has been so admirably treated by a number of the most eminent scholars, which has been approached from almost every conceivable standpoint, and which, therefore, embraces a literature which is already exceedingly voluminous. The writer's apology must be that, in spite of all that has been written, there is one aspect of the subject which, he ventures to think, has not been sufficiently taken into consideration, namely the Jewish. The attempt is, therefore, made in the following pages to give some idea of the place which the Psalms have occupied, and do now occupy, in the Jewish Church. This, it is true, involves touching upon some subjects which have been far better treated by other writers; but in dealing with the place and use of the Psalms among the Jews, such topics as their musical accompaniment, their poetical structure, etc., can scarcely be left out of account. The author has, however, sought to lay more stress on matters which are, as a rule, not dealt with, or only incidentally touched upon, in Commentaries on the Psalms, and the like. Book Description
Excerpt from The Book of Psalms: Translated Out of the Hebrew AN acquaintance with the history of the Canterbury Revision of the Authorized Version of the Holy Scriptures may be assumed. The results are before the world in the editions issued by the Uni versity Presses of Oxford and Cambridge, appearing in the body of the text, in the marginal renderings, and in the Appendix. Showing the instances in which the American Revision Company differed from the English Company. In the present edition of the Psalms the preferences of the American Revision Company expressed in that Appendix, so far as they relate to this portion of the Old Testament, are wrought into the text and margin, while the preferences of the English Company are clearly shown in the Appendix hereto. The work includes nothing more than this, and for this neither the American Company nor any mem ber of it is responsible. Whether this edition should have been produced can scarcely be questioned. It seems to be a simple matter of justice to the Ameri can Revisers, inasmuch as it is indispensable to a proper appreciation of their many and valuable suggestions. Book Description
Excerpt from The Book of Psalms: Edited With Comments and Reflections for the Use of Jewish Parents and Children Who wrote these varying hymns? We cannot tell. Some the singers doubtless wrote themselves; others were written for them. Others, again, and these perhaps the oldest, had been written by this private person or that, as an expression of his own longings and piety, or more often as the vocal utterance of a heart which beat in unison with the highest aspirations and deepest sorrows of Israel. Such existing hymns might be adopted and even adapted for Temple usage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Book of Psalms There is no irreverence in this; Hebrew scholars can be catholic in their literary tastes, and if they lay it down as a canon of translation, that sense should generally take precedence of sound, it is not because they are deaf to the charm of rhythmic melody. Nor ought they, at this hour of the day, to be accused of temerity in deviating from the received Hebrew text. The younger school of Hebrew scholars looks upon the textual and exegetical tradition much as the Sanskrit school represented by Mr. Max Muller looks upon the exegetical tradition of Sayana, and earnestly as it de precates the excesses of some isolated critics, will not pretend to translate that which cannot be translated, simply because the frequent irregularities of Hebrew usage make some current rendering, apart from exegesis, not absolutely inadmissible. The present translator is very conscious of his fallibility but he prefers to offer in such cases a plausible and worthy rendering, based upon some natural emendation, to airing his gram matical acumen at the expense of propriety and con nection. Rather than do this, indeed, he has sometimes left a blank in his version to indicate that the text is perhaps corrupt, and certainly to the translator unintelligible. Book Description
Excerpt from Sing Ye to the Lord: Expositions of Fifty Psalms The Book of Psalms has ever been the favourite prayer-book of the Christian Church, as it was of the Jewish Synagogue. Like the manna in the desert, it has been found by the faithful to have in it all that is delicious and the sweetness of every taste. To saints and sinners, to each and all, it has supplied what they required to lift their minds and hearts to God in praise of His infinite perfections, in thanksgiving for His mercies and benefits, and in petition for the divine assistance in the varying needs of their souls.
