Excerpt: ... CHAPTER II THE BOOK OF PSALMS CHAPTER II THE BOOK OF PSALMS Title. The first book in the collection of Writings, in the ordinary Hebrew Bible, is the book of Psalms. The book itself furnishes no title for the collection of psalms as a whole; nor is such title found anywhere else in the Old Testament. The nearest approach to it occurs in Psalm 72. 20, "The prayers1 of David the son of Jesse are ended." The singular of the same word "prayer" appears as the title of Psalms 17, 86, 90, 102, 142, and would be appropriate in many other cases; indeed, all the psalms glow with the spirit of prayer, if prayer is interpreted in a broad sense as any turning of the heart to God in supplication, reverence, or praise. The later Jews gave to the book the title sepher tehilllm, "book of praises," which title was known also to the early church fathers. The singular noun tehillah, "praise" or "praisesong," which has furnished this appropriate title for the entire book, is found in the Hebrew text as the title of only one psalm.2 The usual Septuagint title is /3ijCUo? ipakjuov, biblos psalmon, "book of psalms,"3 rendered in the Vulgate, Liber psalmorum. In the Codex Alexandrinus the title ipaXrfjptov, psaltcrion--the name of a stringed instrument4--is substituted for the usual Septuagint title. The latter 1 Hebrew, tephilldth; singular, tephiUah. 1 Psalm 145. The ypaXiiM is primarily a song sung to the accompaniment of stringed instruments. 4 Perhaps the same as the frequently mentioned Hebrew nebhel. is used in the New Testament in Luke 20. 42 and Acts 1. 20. The English titles, Book of Psalms and Psalter, are the equivalents of the two Septuagint headings. Number and Division. Both the Hebrew Bible and the Septuagint give the total number of psalms as 150, though the two...

Pages : 286
Book Description
"Magisterial. . . . A learned, brilliant and enjoyable study."—Géza Vermès, Times Literary Supplement In this exciting book, Paula Fredriksen explains the variety of New Testament images of Jesus by exploring the ways that the new Christian communities interpreted his mission and message in light of the delay of the Kingdom he had preached. This edition includes an introduction reviews the most recent scholarship on Jesus and its implications for both history and theology. "Brilliant and lucidly written, full of original and fascinating insights."—Reginald H. Fuller, Journal of the American Academy of Religion "This is a first-rate work of a first-rate historian."—James D. Tabor, Journal of Religion "Fredriksen confronts her documents—principally the writings of the New Testament—as an archaeologist would an especially rich complex site. With great care she distinguishes the literary images from historical fact. Psalms and Liturgy
Author: Dirk J. Human
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 0567359778
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 316
Book Description
This book offers unique insights into the Psalms and sketches a variety of interpretive possibilities. The exposition of Psalm texts against the background of their different historical and/or cultic settings in the ancient Near East sets a firm basis for their reapplication in the liturgy today. In the history of interpretation the Psalms have also proven themselves to be natural texts for liturgical use. This scholarly effort thus portrays in various ways the importance of the Psalms for their reviving interpretation and application in the liturgy. Contributors include: Marcel Bernhard, Georg P. Braulik, Brian Doyle, Alphonso Groenewald, Dirk J. Human, Jorg Jeremias, Louis C. Joner, Jurie H. le Roux, Eckhart Otto, Nick A. Schuman, Stephanus D. Snyman, Hans-Ulrich Steymans, Pieter M. Praying the Psalms in Christ
Author: Laurence Kriegshauser O.S.B.
Publisher: University of Notre Dame Pess
ISBN: 0268084521
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 368
Book Description
Written centuries before Christ, the Psalms of the Hebrew Bible have been prayed by Christians since the founding of the Church. The early church fathers expounded the psalms in the light of the mystery of Christ, his death and resurrection, and his saving redemption. In this book, a Benedictine monk examines the Christian praying of the Psalms, taking into account modern and contemporary research on the Psalms. Working from the Hebrew text, Fr. Laurence Kriegshauser offers a verse-by-verse commentary on each of the one hundred and fifty psalms, highlighting poetic features such as imagery, rhythm, structure, and vocabulary, as well as theological and spiritual dimensions and the relation of psalms to each other in the smaller collections that make up the whole. The book attempts to integrate modern scholarship on the Psalms with the act of prayer and help Christians pray the psalms with greater understanding of their Christological meaning. The book contains an introduction, a glossary of terms, an index of topics, a table of English renderings of selected Hebrew words, and an index of biblical citations. Praying the Psalms in Christ will be welcomed by students of theology and liturgy, by priests, religious, and laypeople who pray the Liturgy of the Hours, and by all Christians who seek to pray the Psalms with greater profit and fervor.

Introduction to Psalms
Author: Hermann Gunkel
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1532690169
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 399
Book Description
Hermann Gunkel's commentary on Psalms (Die Psalmen, HKAT)—considered by many to be his magnum opus—was published in 1926. But he was unable to complete his final work on the Psalms. The severe suffering of the final months of his life forced him to hand over his incomplete manuscript, at Christmastime 1931, to his pupil Joachim Begrich. Gunkel died on 11 March 1932. Begrich put the final touches on the organization of Gunkel's last work on Psalms, and it was published in 1933 as Einleitung in die Psalmen: die Gattungen der religiosen Lyrik Israels. As with much of Gunkel's other work, the influence of Einleitung in die Psalmen on the study of the Pslams, Hebrew poetry, and, indeed, the whole realm of Old Testament literature, lyric, and cult, as already noted, "can scarcely be overestimated.”
