So far we have had little experience with sprinklers in garage fires except some small ones in which the sprinklers were probably of some service in checking or holding the fires, but as to garages generally it is difficult to make a positive statement in reference to the value of' such protection." Assistant Secretary of the Hartford Fire Insurance Company and superintendent of the special risk and inspection department: --"Automatic sprinklers in automobile garages are of value as much diminish the chance of a fire which will ultimately spread into gasoline or napt-ha. We fin that once a flre gets hold of this material. the value of water as an extinguishing medium is much reduced on account of the fact that inflammable liquids lighter than water will float around on it and burn without being extinguished. As the fire department depends primarily upon the same medium for extinguishing fires.---water.---it is obviously an advantage even in a place like this to have the water immediately available at the time a fire breaks out than to have to wait for it to be brought through hose from hydrants."
