Theory of Probability

Theory of Probability PDF Author: Boris V. Gnedenko
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351408585
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 524

Book Description
This book is the sixth edition of a classic text that was first published in 1950 in the former Soviet Union. The clear presentation of the subject and extensive applications supported with real data helped establish the book as a standard for the field. To date, it has been published into more that ten languages and has gone through five editions. The sixth edition is a major revision over the fifth. It contains new material and results on the Local Limit Theorem, the Integral Law of Large Numbers, and Characteristic Functions. The new edition retains the feature of developing the subject from intuitive concepts and demonstrating techniques and theory through large numbers of examples. The author has, for the first time, included a brief history of probability and its development. Exercise problems and examples have been revised and new ones added.

Elementary Probability Theory

Elementary Probability Theory PDF Author: Melvin Hausner
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461517532
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
This text contains ample material for a one term precalculus introduction to probability theory. lt can be used by itself as an elementary introduc tion to probability, or as the probability half of a one-year probability statistics course. Although the development of the subject is rigorous, experimental motivation is maintained throughout the text. Also, statistical and practical applications are given throughout. The core of the text consists of the unstarred sections, most of chapters 1-3 and 5-7. Included are finite probability spaces, com binatorics, set theory, independence and conditional probability, random variables, Chebyshev's theorem, the law of large numbers, the binomial distribution, the normal distribution and the normal approxi mation to the binomial distribution. The starred sections include limiting and infinite processes, a mathematical discussion of symmetry, and game theory. These sections are indicated with an*, and are optional and sometimes more difficult. I have, in most places throughout the text, given decimal equivalents to fractional answers. Thus, while the mathematician finds the answer p = 17/143 satisfactory, the scientist is best appeased by the decimal approximation p = 0.119. A decimal answer gives a ready way of find ing the correct order of magnitude and of comparing probabilities.

Book Description
This graduate-level text and reference in probability, with numerous applications to several fields of science, presents nonmeasure-theoretic introduction to theory of Markov processes. The work also covers mathematical models based on the theory, employed in various applied fields. Prerequisites are a knowledge of elementary probability theory, mathematical statistics, and analysis. Appendixes. Bibliographies. 1960 edition.

Collection of problems in probability theory

Collection of problems in probability theory PDF Author: L.D. Meshalkin
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401023581
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 156

Book Description
The Russian version of A collection of problems in probability theory contains a chapter devoted to statistics. That chapter has been omitted in this translation because, in the opinion of the editor, its content deviates somewhat from that which is suggested by the title: problems in pro bability theory. The original Russian version contains some errors; an attempt was made to correct all errors found, but perhaps a few stiII remain. An index has been added for the convenience of the reader who may be searching for a definition, a classical problem, or whatever. The index lists pages as well as problems where the indexed words appear. The book has been translated and edited with the hope of leaving as much "Russian flavor" in the text and problems as possible. Any pecu liarities present are most likely a result of this intention. August, 1972 Bryan A. Haworth viii Foreword to the Russian edition This Collection of problems in probability theory is primarily intended for university students in physics and mathematics departments. Its goal is to help the student of probability theory to master the theory more pro foundly and to acquaint him with the application of probability theory methods to the solution of practical problems. This collection is geared basically to the third edition of the GNEDENKO textbook Course in proba bility theory, Fizmatgiz, Moscow (1961), Probability theory, Chelsea (1965).
