Book Description
Warfighters must give increased attention to the study of leadership. Intuition and military superiority alone will not promise success. The study of Operational Leadership will illuminate those values that contribute to victory. Further, education and an understanding of history can best determine the course of action the Operational Commander should consider in preparing for hostilities. Aristotle notes that it is possible to reason correctly from false premises, thus coming up with logically correct, but untrue conclusions. To avoid this potential pitfall, a Commander must possess the precise knowledge of the Principles of Operational Leadership, and use these precepts correctly in order to secure success in future conflicts. This paper's approach towards Operational Leadership provides: (a) The Principles of Operational Leadership; (b) The historical examples of Operational Leadership through the case studies of three distinct battles during the Civil War involving General U.S. Grant, and; (c) Describes how the acquired Principles of Operational Leadership and historical lessons must be cultivated in a stressful academic atmosphere, prior to being tested on the battlefield. This paper judges Grant's performance using the Principle's of Operational Leadership. This review and analysis of General Grant's Operational Leadership through a 'window of history', offers a practical example for military leaders, to assist them in achieving their ultimate objective - victory. These practical examples from history and an education on the tenets of Operational Leadership, accomplished under a stressful regimen, can better guarantee success in tomorrow's conflicts.

Book Description
What would you do? Outsourcing worked well for your company's new COO in his previous company. Now he's pushing it for your company, where you run engineering for the head of Operations. You and your boss believe outsourcing is wrong because it would eliminate one of your company's key competitive advantages - its ability to manufacture custom-built products quickly and at prices that nearly match your competitors' build-to-stock prices. You push back, but the COO disagrees and orders you to make the case for outsourcing. He says the company's CEO/founder supports this new direction absolutely. Though your boss personally opposes outsourcing, he says you have no choice. What would you do? "Do the Right Thing" is a collection of this and 20 more stories compiled in memory of Don Davis, a long-time teacher in MIT's Leaders for Global Operations (LGO) program. A successful leader himself - for over 20 years he was CEO of The Stanley Works, which he built into a Fortune 500 firm - Davis taught his MIT course, Leadership and Ethics, around a set of leadership principles, his "mantras," that he distilled from his own long experience. Because he knew the principles were simple in concept but difficult to apply, Davis built his course around stories of knotty leadership problems that he, along with the many prominent guest speakers he brought in, had faced. In that same spirit, his students in "Do the Right Thing" describe how they went on to management positions at all levels and applied those mantras to resolve nitty-gritty leadership problems themselves. There are no simple answers here, no easy resolutions for all involved, only tough choices that invite you to learn by asking yourself, "What would I do?"

Leadership in the Trenches

Leadership in the Trenches PDF Author: David B. Pomeroy, II
Publisher: CreateSpace
ISBN: 9781491272251
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 206

Book Description
Leadership In The Trenches is an honest look at the reality of what it takes to be an effective leader in today's business world-what it takes to succeed. Combining 40 years of business experience with essential research into organizational behavior and social psychology, Leadership in the Trenches explains the traits and temperament that a leader needs to be successful. It teaches these success principles through anecdotes, examples and clear explanations that people can understand and relate to, encouraging the reader and delivering a powerful challenge to excel. The book is designed to help entrepreneurs, managers and everyone else willing to take ownership of their lives to see the path to success and gain the tools to stay on course. So many businesses and managers fail to live up to their potential, or fail entirely. There has never been a stronger need for advice and guidance from those who did not fail, and the kind of solutions and direction found in Leadership In The Trenches. "Leadership" begins by painting a picture of the harsh reality of today's business environment, to remind readers of the price of failure. It then provides detailed explanations of the qualities, knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to not only succeed, but lead others to success, regardless of one's level in an organization. The book first prepares the reader by providing a clear definition of "Leadership"; what it means, and what it doesn't mean. From there it turns to the most important principles of organizational behavior and human psychology, explaining why people do (and don't do), covering topics of Emotional Intelligence, Constructive Resistance and Cognitive Dissonance; although technical sounding, the book greatly simplifies these topics. After building a foundational understanding of these principles through easy-to-understand examples and anecdotes from the author's personal experiences, the book expounds important management techniques. These chapters include: Setting Expectations (both for self and for others); How important Financial Reporting is in business; How to turn Negative Situations into Opportunities; and How to create Backup Plans and Exit Strategies--which most entrepreneurs and management never think about until it's too late. The final focus of the book is on appropriate managerial skills and attitudes. These topics cover: Trust and Interpersonal Dependency; Separation of Business and Personal Life; and Focusing on Abilities and Communication. Another recurring theme is that Awareness of the Self and the Thought Processes Of Others are key skills to being an effective leader. The final questions to the reader are: What is it that truly motivates people to become the best they can be? and What is your roadblock to success? The answer is "You."
