Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of International Law The story I have to tell will be found in the text. I have not relegated important matter to notes, nor printed on my pages long quotations from other authors or excerpts from original authorities. I have preferred the much more labo rions task of extracting their substance and putting it in my own words into the body of the book, which I trust has gained thereby in both the decrease of bulk and increase of readableness. But I have taken care to provide the means of checking my assertions. At the bottom of nearly every page will be found references, by the use of which teachers and students can amplify or correct the statements in the text and men of aflairs obtain the more detailed information they may want for practical purposes. The notes are, I h0pe, sufficient. My object has been to make them adequate without over loading them with matter. I have not, for instance, referred to a large number of writers of all degrees of authority, when the citation of a few great ones gave the necessary support to my argument; nor have I quoted a dozen cases, when one or two were enough. I have also taken care that most of the cases given in the text should be something more than mere names to my readers. The material facts are almost always described, so that the points of law may be seen inviii preface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Chapters on the Principles of International Law This book is not a detailed treatise on international law, but an attempt to stimulate and assist reflection on its principles. It is primarily intended in part performance of a professor's duty to his university, though not without hope that it may be of use to others as well. International law being the science of what a state and its subjects ought to do or may do with reference to other states and their subjects, everyone should reflect on its principles who, in however limited a sphere of influence, helps to determine the action of his country by swelling the volume of its opinion. Indeed to prepare men for the duties of citizenship is the chief justification for introducing into education a subject which, on account of its inevitable defect in precision, is less suited as a training for the mind than as an exercise for the trained mind. Again, international law is not a highly technical subject, and it would be a mistake to aim at giving it more technicality by the I mode of treating it. Book Description
Excerpt from A New Principle of International Law In the midst of the dreadful world events one asks oneself: How much longer? How much longer shall this slaughter of human beings -last? Until one side or the other has been vanquished? Thus have wars ended up to the present. But the peace, which then followed, was generally not of long duration. Indeed a peace, to which the vanquished have been driven, gives them no rest, but on the contrary incites to fresh conflict. It has always been so up to now, and so will it be, if in this case also, peace is imposed upon the vanquished. Recognition in International Law

Recognition in International Law PDF Author: Hersch Lauterpacht
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1107609437
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 505

Book Description
Originally published by Hersch Lauterpacht in 1947, this book presents a detailed study of recognition in international law, examining its crucial significance in relation to statehood, governments and belligerency. The author develops a strong argument for positioning recognition within the context of international law, reacting against the widely accepted conception of it as an area of international politics. Numerous examples of the use of law and conscious adherence to legal principle in the practice of states are used to give weight to this perspective. This paperback re-issue in 2012 includes a newly commissioned Foreword by James Crawford, Whewell Professor of International Law at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Development of International Law After the World War In accordance with its original character, this book offers only a survey of the future problems of international law. In this work I have given merely some directing outlines. I have been obliged to forgo entering upon the individual problems here, since this would have claimed materially more space and also more time. But I also believe that m the present hour it 18 above all necessary to call to mind once more the fundamental tendencies in the development of international law. The problems to be solved for international law in the future are neither simple nor small in number. We may rejoice if, upon the conclusion of peace, we succeed in obtaining an agreement on the basic principles. The future work will, however, take decades. Book Description
Excerpt from World Peace, or Principles of International Law in Their Application to Efforts for the Preservation of the Peace of the World But events are moving rapidly. The great epoch producing period has not passed, and it will not have passed until the questions of an attempt at permanent peace and of reconstrue tion are settled, and events will move rapidly until that time, not fast enough to please some, but possibly too fast to insure the permanence of the settlement that shall be attained. When it became apparent that the American people were going to be called upon, either through the right of petition or at the polls, to express themselves upon the question of a pro posed constitution for a League of Nations I was an earnest advocate of the belief that every person should study such questions and that all who had given such study serious con sideration should express themselves to the end that any action on the part of the people would be the result of thought and delibera tion.
