Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of Feeding Farm Animals This volume is an outgrowth from a class manual written several years ago by the author for the use of elementary students at the University of Illinois in a general course in stock-feeding. Inasmuch as there has been some little demand for the class manual from outside sources, the author has rewritten the original manuscript and added a number of valuable illustrations and tables. An effort has been made to present the scientific facts underlying the art of feeding animals in such a manner that the book will not only be suitable for use as a text for college courses in general feeding, but will also be valuable to the farmer who has not had a technical education in agriculture. Thus it has been deemed wise to omit many minor details and a large part of the mass of experimental data from which the general conclusions are deduced. In the first six chapters the author has discussed the scientific aspects of the subject and has attempted to present them in a simple, concise manner so that they may be easily understood, not only by the student but also by the feeder who desires to familiarize himself with the scientific principles underlying the art of stock-feeding. A large number of drawings and photographs illustrating points in the discussion should be of great value in this connection. Book Description
Excerpt from First Principles of Feeding Farm Animals: A Practical Treatise on the Feeding of Farm Animals; Discussing the Fundamental Principles and Reviewing the Best Practices of Feeding for Largest Returns The fundamental principles of feeding animals are applicable to all parts of the country and to all parts of the world. For many years investigators have been at work on problems of nutrition and on interpreting the data obtained. As a result the student farmer has now at hand useful suggestions that will assist in handling the feeding problems of the farm to the best advantage. The man who feeds in a scientific manner is able not only to use his feeding stuffs more economically but he can obtain animal products more cheaply than can his neighbor who ignores the helps that science offers him. To these facts the author himself can testify. He not only has been a teacher of animal nutrition for many years, but has had a life-time experience also with the practical problems of feeding in feed-lots and stables. The volume herewith presented discusses the first principles of scientific feeding and aims to interpret them so as to be equally useful to student, stockman and farmer. In this presentation, the needs of the teacher of animal feeding have also been kept in mind at every step, the object being to set forth the several phases in pedagogical as well as utilitarian form. Book Description
Excerpt from Feeding of Farm Animals The great interest which is being taken in the feeding of animals and the constant demands which are being made on this Station for information along these lines, has made it imperative for us to issue this Bulletin, setting forth the general principles underlying all animal feeding, together with such data and comments as have seemed most essential for the farmer and stockman. Notwithstanding that the majority of the experiment stations have issued bulletins covering the same Subject, the climatic conditions obtaining in California and the wide difference in our foods from those of the older States render it necessary that this Bulletin be issued to deal more intelligently with the environments peculiar to this State. Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of Animal Nutrition: With Special Reference to the Nutrition of Farm Animals The past two decades have not only witnessed great activity in the study of the various problems of animal nutrition, but they are especially distinguished by the new point of view from which these problems have come to be regarded. Speaking broadly, it may be said that to an increasing knowledge of the chemistry of nutrition has been added a clear and fairly definite general conception of the vital activities as transformations of energy and of the food as essentially the vehicle for supplying that energy to the organism. This conception of the function of nutrition has been a fruitful one, and in particular has tended to introduce greater simplicity and unity into thought and discussion. Much exceedingly valuable work has been done under its guidance. While it points the way toward even more important results in the future. The following pages are not a treatise upon stock-feeding, but are an attempt to present in systematic form to students of that subject a summary of our present knowledge of some of the fundamental principles of ani mal nutrition, particularly from the standpoint of energy relations, with special reference to their bearings upon the nutrition of farm animals. Should the attempt at systematization appear in some instances premature or ill-advised, the writer can only plead that even a temporary or tentative system, if clearly recognized as such, may be preferable to unorganized knowledge. The scaffolding has its uses, even though it form no part of the completed building. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Feeds and Feeding Abridged

Feeds and Feeding Abridged PDF Author: W. A. Henry

Book Description
Excerpt from Feeds and Feeding Abridged: The Essentials of the Feeding, Care, and Management of Farm, Animals, Including Poultry, Adapted and Condensed From Feeds and Feeding (Eighteenth Edition) Farm animals are really living factories that are continuously con verting their feed into products useful to man. A most important fact is that a large part of the feed thus made useful is of such char acter that it cannot be directly utilized by humans. Among the products yielded by animals are such articles of human diet as meat, milk, and eggs, materials like wool, mohair, and hides, which meet other needs of man, and, of greater aggregate value than any one of these, the work performed by draft animals. Each year the farm animals in the United States yield over five billion dollars' worth of useful products - a sum almost equal to the value of all the crops harvested. As the population of our country increases, most naturally a smaller portion of the crops raised can be fed to animals and more will be con sumed directly by humans. This change must come with the ih creased demand for human food, since even high-producing animals can convert but a small part of their food into forms edible for man. However, not only is the number of farm animals failing to keep pace with-the increase in population, but the number of cattle and sheep in this country has actually decreased in recent years, and the number of swine has increased but little. This means that animal products can not long hold their present important place in our diet unless American farmers come to appreciate the advantages of stock farm ing and better understand the principles and methods which are essential to its success.
