Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of Argumentation: Revised and Augmented The study of argumentation has increased so rapidly in schools and colleges during the ten years since the first edition of this book was published that it is no longer necessary to justify the educational importance of the subject. Nor is it necessary now to explain in detail the kind of argumentation taught in this book. For these reasons a large amount of justificatory and explanatory material which filled the early pages of the first edition has been removed. On the other hand, in the ten years since the Principles of Argumentation appeared, it has become steadily clearer that the principles of analysis needed restating for greater accuracy and simplicity; that the difficult subject of evidence, especially refutation, should be given fuller treatment; that the material in the chapter on brief-drawing could be simplified and clarified by rearrangement and a different emphasis; that persuasion needed much more detailed exposition; and that, perhaps the most marked need of all, the importance of rhetoric in argumentation should be given insistent emphasis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of Argumentation The principles set forth in this book, the queries answered, I have so often talked over with the assistants who, at Harvard and Wellesley, have aided me in my work, that I feel the results here given are as much theirs as mine. I owe so much in the past, also, to their enthu siasm and their intelligent devotion to their work, that I cannot refrain from recognizing my indebtedness. For valuable suggestions while this book has been going through the press and for reading of the proofs I wish in particular to thank assistant-professor S. C. Hart of Wellesley College, and Mr. F. G. Caffey, of Montgomery, Alabama. For the classification of definitions used on pp. 54 - 59 I am indebted to Professor Genung in his Practical Elcmmts of R/zetorz'c.
