Excerpt from The Princeton Theological Review, 1911, Vol. 9 The fundamental assertion of the Biblical doctrine Of the origin of man is that he owes his being to a creative act of God. Subsidiary questions growing out of this fundamental assertion, however, have been thrown from time to time into great prominence, as the changing forms of current ah thropological speculation have seemed to press on this or that element in, or corollary from, the Biblical teaching. The most important Of these subsidiary questions has concerned the method Of the Divine procedure in creating man. Dis cussion of this question became acute on the publication of Charles Darwin's treatise on the Origin of Species in 1859, and can never sink again into rest until it is thoroughly understood in all quarters that evolution cannot act as a substitute for creation, but at best can supply only a theory of the method of the Divine providence. Closely connected with this discussion of the mode of origination of man, has been the discussion of two further questions. Both Older than the Darwinian theory, to one Of which it gave however a new impulse, while it has well-nigh destroyed all interest in the other. These are the questions of the Antiquity Of Man and the Unity Of the Human Race. To both of which a large historical interest attaches, though neither of them can be said to be burning questions of to-day. Excerpt from The Princeton Theological Review, 1907, Vol. 5 That any attempt to write the history of the apostolic age without taking account of the life and work of Jesus must prove inadequate will not be denied. For whether we learn of this from Paul or from other sources, it is the fact of the life and work, death and resurrection of Jesus which is the prius of the subsequent history. The resurrection, it is true, is often eliminated from the statement of the factual basis upon which the early Church rested and of which account must be taken by historians of the apostolic age, and in its place is put the belief of the disciples in the resurrec tion. But whatever view be taken of the resurrection of Jesus as narrated in the New Testament, it will be admitted that the history of the apostolic age can not be understood apart from the person of Jesus: what He was, what He did, what He taught, what impression He made on his disciples and what they believed concerning Him. Excerpt from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin, 1988, Vol. 9 And yet the ironies of history: the most important theological result of von Balthasar's book was that the whole antithesis between the analogy of being and the analogy of faith, so strongly emphasized by Barth, was shown up as afalse problem. Whatever may go on in popular Catholic piety, Cath olic theology and the Catholic Church are grounded in faith, they cannot and will not usurp the grace of God. Barth had been taken in hand, theo logically, by von Balthasar's meticulous distinguishing of the shades of meaning in the term nature, and the more time that passed the more he had to concede this. In the mid - 19503 when I, as a young man (worried by these problems, like many other Catholic theologians), spoke to Barth about this controversy, he showed he was a man not only of holy wrath, but of winning humor too, when he answered: In theology you never know: Has he got me, or have'i got him? And with respect to the much disputed analogy of being, the sole reason one could not become a Catholic, he simply said: I've buried it. And as a matter of fact - without, of course, ever publicly explaining himself - Barth never used the expression afterwards. But that in no way prevented backwards Catholic theologians (and some times Protestant ones too), who would have liked to see the schism in the Church grounded and secured not just with the pope, the Church, and the sacraments, but, more, with the Holy Spirit, with Jesus Christ, or indeed with God the Father in person, from lavishing loving care on the analogy of being as the actual point of discord dividing the Church.
