The Royal Tomb of Isopata The narrow capacity of these clay chests has given rise to the idea that they were simple ossuaries, and that the bones had been placed in them after the decomposition of the flesh. Where, as is sometimes the case, more than one skull occurs inside the chest, there may be some warrant to this idea, but evidence like that afforded by the larnaw found in Grave No. 80 below, shows that the body of the deceased was actually stowed away in the clay receptacle.
