Whitney: Poems and Poetic Prose At various times during the past dozen years or more - the period covered by my efforts in the literary field, I have been advised, even importuned, by well-meaning friends, to gather up the scattered, and, as I fear, withered leaves that have fallen from my tree of poesy, and weave them into a garland; in other words, to publish my poems in a book. To act upon this suggestion, while grateful for the spirit which prompted it, I have hitherto been loth; for, although a lover of poetry, and an occasional writer of rhymes, I have never deemed myself a poet, nor imagined that any production of mine would entitle its author to even the lowest pedestal, or humblest nook, in the "poet's corner" of public opinion. This poem, written by Orson F. Whitney, was composed on April 22, 1885. The poem is two pages long and is titled "To Emily". Since Whitney's wife had borne him a daughter on 29 January 1885, it can be inferred that this poem was dedicated to his new daughter, Emily. Whitney wrote "To Emily" at the age of twenty-nine and cites, on the edge of the poem, that he was inspired to pen the words to paper because of a heartfelt experience that had given him the realization that he could find hope even in the darkest of times. The poem included in this file is a photocopy of the original and is in Whitney's hand.
