Regula tions governing practice shooting with these arms have been issued and adopted by both branches of the service and by the National Guard of the various States. In the National Rifle Association and in the various State Rifle Associations that have recently been organized, pistol and revolver shooting has an important place, and the matches provided are largely patronized. Book Description
Excerpt from Modern American Pistols and Revolvers: An Account of the Development of Pistols and Revolvers in America The first edition of Modern American Pistols and Revolvers was published in 1888. At that time there was but little general knowledge of the capabilities of the pistol or the revolver. A general impression pre vailed that there was little or no accuracy in the arms, or if they were accurate, those manipulating them skill fully were specially gifted. The publication of the first edition showed the great accuracy and reliability of certain arms, and made it apparent that to become skillful in manipulating them-was only a matter of practice. This stimulated many devotees of shooting to attempt to acquire a proficiency. As a result, at the time of writing there are expert pistol and revolver shots in various sections of the country; and as the shooting world has no national confines, this statement may be applied to many parts of the world. Book Description
Excerpt from Pistol and Revolver Shooting On account of this relation, and the fact that skill with these arms can be instantly utilized in rifle shooting, the development of marksmanship with the pistol and revolver assumes national importance. While numerous standard works have been written on the subject of rifle shooting, there is comparatively little information available on pistol and revolver shooting. The object of this volume is to supply prac tical information on this subject. The author has attempted to treat the subject in a clear and concise manner, keeping the size of the volume as small as practicable and so as to be conveniently carried in the pocket. Particular pains have been taken to give sound advice and elementary instruction to beginners. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Pistol and Revolver Shooting, Vol. 34 Interest in pistol and revolver shooting has increased very rapidly in recent years and particularly since smokeless powder has been introduced. The revolver and the magazine pistol now constitute part of the regular equipment of army and navy officers and cavalry troops. Regulations governing practice shooting with these arms have been issued and adopted by both branches of the service and by the National Guard of the various States. In the National Rifle Association and in the various State rifle associations that have recently been organized, pistol and revolver shooting has an important place, and the matches provided are largely patronized. In the numerous civilian shooting clubs scattered throughout the country pistol and revolver shooting has become extremely popular, and in many cases the majority of the members practice more frequently with the smaller arms than with the rifle. Practice with the pistol and revolver affords training in sighting, steady holding, and pulling the trigger, which are the essential features of rifle shooting also. The Modern Pistol

Book Description
Excerpt from The Modern Pistol: And How to Shoot It My first book on pistol shooting (The Art of Revolver Shooting) was published in 1900. Up to that date there existed no book which contained instruction on pistol shooting, though several books had appeared describing the different makes of pistols. Since that date several books have appeared - some very good ones, by various revolver experts. Unfortunately (as always happens when something original appears), others who were not revolver shots took to writing books on the same subject, largely made up of unacknowledged extracts from my books. Not understanding their subject, they distorted my teaching, and so any one trying to learn pistol shooting from them gets hopelessly confused. I therefore give this warning; do not follow the advice of any but an acknowledged expert in pistol shooting, as books by hack writers, made up of extracts from other writers, and illustrations from gunmakers' catalogues, are not to be taken seriously. Moreover, the revolver is now obsolete, and there is no use learning to shoot it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Modern American Pistol and Revolver: Including a Description of Modern Pistols and Revolvers of American Make; Ammunition Used in These Arms; Results Accomplished; And Shooting-Rules Followed by American Marksmen For many years the author was among the great number of persons who believed it was impossible to do fine shooting with a pistol beyond a few yards, and out of the question to secure much accuracy from a revolver. With the object of learning the limit of accuracy these arms possessed, a great many experiments were arranged and exhibitions given by the most skilful marksmen to be found. The spirit of rivalry soon became apparent, and, without doubt, has considerably aided in determining the possibilities of the pistol and revolver. The author feels that his labors have not been in vain, as he has the testimony of manufacturers of these arms, as well as cartridge-makers, that the results obtained within a period of three years are finer than it was thought possible. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The Modern American Pistol and Revolver: Look inside the book: As the .22-calibre is perfectly accurate up to fifty yards, and our own experiments compared with others lead us to believe the small calibre is fully as accurate as the larger, and beyond a doubt that with good weather conditions the larger bore possesses no advantages over the small bore up to fifty yards in point of accuracy, and the fact that the cost of the. 22-calibre ammunition is so much less, is more compact, allowing a large number of cartridges to be carried about, and the knowledge that the tiny bore can be shot so many times without cleaning, makes it the favorite calibre, in single-shot pistols, for target and small-game shooting within the distance named. ...Revolvers with a barrel of five inches, orPg 29 less, in length are generally classed as pocket revolvers, and those of the Smith & Wesson make are accurate up to twenty yards; doubtless good shooting can be done at a longer distance, depending entirely upon what the shooter would call fine work; but, as one or two additional inches in length make the arm capable of doing so much finer work, that most revolver-shooters readily perceive the difference, and, waiving the convenience of a revolver with a five-inch barrel, which can be carried in the pocket, they select one with a barrel not less than six inches, and as the distance of out-of-door revolver-shooting, in America, is from 25 to 50 yards, they have a weapon capable of great accuracy at these distances.
