Light

Light PDF Author: R. W. Ditchburn
Publisher: Courier Corporation
ISBN: 0486666670
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 738

Book Description
This classic study, available for the first time in paperback, clearly demonstrates how quantum theory is a natural development of wave theory, and how these two theories, once thought to be irreconcilable, together comprise a single valid theory of light. Aimed at students with an intermediate-level knowledge of physics, the book first offers a historical introduction to the subject, then covers topics such as wave theory, interference, diffraction, Huygens' Principle, Fermat's Principle, and the accuracy of optical measurements. Additional topics include the velocity of light, relativistic optics, polarized light, electromagnetic theory, and the quantum theory of radiation. The more difficult mathematics has been placed in appendixes, or in separated paragraphs in small type, intended to be omitted on first reading. Examples and/or references follow each chapter to assist the student in absorbing the material and to suggest additional resources.

Light Science

Light Science PDF Author: Thomas Rossing
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780387988276
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 496

Book Description
Intended for students in the visual arts and for others with an interest in art, but with no prior knowledge of physics, this book presents the science behind what and how we see. The approach emphasises phenomena rather than mathematical theories and the joy of discovery rather than the drudgery of derivations. The text includes numerous problems, and suggestions for simple experiments, and also considers such questions as why the sky is blue, how mirrors and prisms affect the colour of light, how compact disks work, and what visual illusions can tell us about the nature of perception. It goes on to discuss such topics as the optics of the eye and camera, the different sources of light, photography and holography, colour in printing and painting, as well as computer imaging and processing.

The IVth International Conference on Quarks and Nuclear Physics

The IVth International Conference on Quarks and Nuclear Physics PDF Author: Antonio Dobado

The QCD Vacuum, Hadrons and Superdense Matter

The QCD Vacuum, Hadrons and Superdense Matter PDF Author: E. V. Shuryak
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9789812385741
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 644

Book Description
This invaluable book is an extensive set of lecture notes on various aspects of non-perturbative quantum chromodynamics ? the fundamental theory of strong interaction on which nuclear and hadronic physics is based. The original edition of the book, written in the mid-1980's, had more of a review style. In the second edition the outline remains the same, but the text has been completely rewritten, and extended. Apart from the new developments over the years, this edition has benefited from several graduate courses which the author has taught at Stony Brook during the last decade. The text is now complemented by exercises and has a total of about 1000 references to major works, arranged by subject.Three major issues ? the structure of the QCD vacuum, the structure of hadrons, and the physics of hot/dense matter ? are addressed as physics problems. Therefore, when discussing any specific subject, the book attempts to incorporate (1) all the solid theoretical results, (2) experimental information, and (3) results of numerical (lattice) simulations, which are playing an increasing role in quantum field theory in general, and the development of QCD in particular. The QCD Vacuum, Hadrons and Superdense Matter takes the reader from the first encounter with the subject to the front line of research, as quickly as possible.

Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors

Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors PDF Author: J.D. Chadi
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461576822
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1580

Book Description
The Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors are contained in this volume. A record 1050 scientists from 40 countries participated in the Conference which was held in San Francisco August 6ยท1 0, 1984. The Conference was organized by the ICPS Committee and sponsored by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics and other professional, government, and industrial organizations listed on the following pages. Papers representing progress in all aspects of semiconductor physics were presented. Far more abstracts (765) than could be presented in a five-day meeting were considered by the International Program Committee. A total of 350 papers, consisting of 5 plenary, 35 invited, and 310 contributed, were presented at the Conference in either oral or poster sessions. All but a few of the papers were submitted and have been included in these Proceedings. An interesting shift in subject matter, in comparison with earlier Conferences, is manifested by the large number of papers on surfaces, interfaces, and quantum wells. To facilitate the use of the Proceedings in finding closely related papers among the sometimes relatively large number of contributions within a main subject area, we chose not to arrange the papers strictly according to the Conference schedule. We have organized the book, as can be seen from the Contents, into specific subcategories and subdivisions within each major category. Plenary and invited papers have been placed together with the appropriate contributed papers.

The Physics of the Quark-Gluon Plasma

The Physics of the Quark-Gluon Plasma PDF Author: Sourav Sarkar
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642022855
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 374

Book Description
The aim of this book is to offer to the next generation of young researchers a broad and largely self-contained introduction to the physics of heavy ion collisions and the quark-gluon plasma, providing material beyond that normally found in the available textbooks. For each of the main aspects - QCD thermodynamics and global features of the QGP, collision hydrodynamics, electromagnetic probes, jet and quarkonium production, color glass condensate, and the gravity connection - the present volume provides extensive and pedagogical lectures, surveying the present status of both theory and experiment. A particular feature of this volume is that all lectures have been written with the active assistance of selected students present at the course in order to ensure the adequate level and coverage for the intended readership.
