The Metallurgy of Nuclear Fuel

The Metallurgy of Nuclear Fuel PDF Author: V. S. Yemel'Yanov
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483186024
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 600

Book Description
The Metallurgy of Nuclear Fuel: Properties and Principles of the Technology of Uranium, Thorium and Plutonium is a systematic analysis of the metallurgy of nuclear fuel, with emphasis on the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties as well as the technology of uranium, thorium, and plutonium, together with their alloys and compounds. The minerals and raw material sources of nuclear fuel are discussed, along with the principles of the technology of the raw material processing and the production of the principal compounds, and of the pure metals and alloys. Comprised of three parts, this volume begins with an introduction to the history of the discovery of uranium and its position in the periodic system; its use as a nuclear fuel; radioactivity and isotopic composition; alloys and compounds; and physical, mechanical, and chemical properties. The effect of mechanical and thermal treatment, thermal cycling and irradiation on the physicochemical properties of uranium is also examined. The next two sections are devoted to thorium and plutonium and includes chapters dealing with their uses, alloys and compounds, and methods of recovery and purification. This book is written for university students, but should also prove useful to young production engineers and scientific workers who are concerned with problems in the metallurgy of nuclear fuel.

Development and Properties of Uranium-base Alloys Corrosion Resistant in High Temperature Water

Development and Properties of Uranium-base Alloys Corrosion Resistant in High Temperature Water PDF Author: Melvin L. Bleiberg
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Uranium alloys
Languages : en
Pages : 122

Book Description
The effects of pile irradiations on the physical properties and corrosion resistance of U-- Mo, U-- Nb; and U--Si alloys are reported. The dimensional stability under irradiation of the gamma phase U-- Mo and U-- Nb alloys is excellent; however, an isotropic volume increase of 4 to 6% per wt.% burnup may limit the ultimate fuel element life. Corrosion resistance of the gamma-phase alloys appesrs to be improved when subjected to s neutron field; this is attributed to an irrsdiation induced stabilization of the gamma phases. The U/ sub 3/Si alloy, on the other hand, suffered severe deterioration, particularly of corrosion resistance. Changes in electrical resistivity, hardness, mechanical properties, and crystal structure are presented and the mechanisms producing the observed changes discussed.

HIGH TEMPERATURE PROPERTIES OF URANIUM AND ITS ALLOYS.

HIGH TEMPERATURE PROPERTIES OF URANIUM AND ITS ALLOYS. PDF Author:

Book Description
Data are presented on the mechanical and physical properties of high- purity and normal uranium and for a range of dilute uranium alloys at temperatures up to 700 deg C. The results of thermal conductivity and thermal expansion determinations for a range of alloys are discussed, and some results on the latent heat of fusion and volume change on melting are presented. Results of dilute alloy creep tests are reported and correlated with thermal cycling data and resistence to swelling under irradiation. (J.R.D.).
