Cobalt, Nickel, and the Elements of the Platinum Group (Classic Reprint)

Cobalt, Nickel, and the Elements of the Platinum Group (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: J. Newton Friend

Book Description
Excerpt from Cobalt, Nickel, and the Elements of the Platinum Group Again, the platinum metals are so closely similar in many of their properties that it was decided to treat of their detection and estimation all together in Chapter X, rather than to deal with each separately at the end of the chapters dealing with their compounds, as has been done with cobalt and nickel, and, indeed, with the elements in the remaining volumes. The state of our knowledge of the chemistry of the platinum metals, although greatly improved during the last twenty years, is still far from satisfactory. This, no doubt, is due to a variety of reasons, such as the rarity of the metals, their consequently high cost, apd their similarity to one another, which renders their preparation in a state of purity an extremely arduous task. This latter feature is well exemplified by the efforts of Matthey to prepare pure iridium. His work is described in fair detail on pp. 235 - 236 of the text. Even after a most elaborate treatment the metal still contained traces of ruthenium and rhodium. In consequence of this difficulty, there can be no doubt that the early investigators frequently worked with a very impure metal, and this may in some measure account for discrepancies and apparent contradictions in their results. Book Description
Excerpt from Cobalt Alloys With Non-Corrosive Properties The comparative effects of small amounts of cobalt, nickel and copper were studied. Our interest was stimulated by the positive nature of certain very early preliminary experiments, described in the next paragraph. Cobalt Oxides

Cobalt Oxides PDF Author: Bernard Raveau
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 3527645535
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 543

Book Description
Unparalleled in the breadth and depth of its coverage of all important aspects, this book systematically treats the electronic and magnetic properties of stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric cobaltites in both ordered and disordered phases. Authored by a pioneer and a rising star in the field, the monograph summarizes, organizes and streamlines the otherwise difficult-to-obtain information on this topic. An introductory chapter sets forth the crystal chemistry of cobalt oxides to lay the groundwork for an understanding of the complex phenomena observed in this materials class. Special emphasis is placed on a comprehensive discussion of cobaltite physical properties in different structural families. Providing a thorough introduction to cobalt oxides from a chemical and physical viewpoint as a basis for understanding their intricacies, this is a must-have for both experienced researchers as well as entrants to the field.
