The Sipuncula
Author: Edward B. Cutler
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 1501723642
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 474
Book Description
The Sipuncula, a group of ocean-dwelling worms related to annelids and mollusks, play a significant role in the bioerosion of coral reefs and are useful indicators of environmental conditions. The 155 species live in a wide variety of marine habitats at all depths, in sand and mud, in burrows in soft rock and dead coral, and inside such protective shelters as mollusk shells. Important food items for fish and invertebrate predators, they also recycle organic wastes and function as bioassay tools for human diseases such as cystic fibrosis and acute cholera. Edward B. Cutler brings together in this volume everything that is known about the entire phylum. An introduction, with practical information about collecting and handling the animals, is followed by Part One, which incorporates new systematic analyses made during the past twenty years and offers illustrated keys to all taxa, replacing the work of A.C. Stephen and S.J. Edmonds. Part Two reviews the past thirty years' work in such areas as ecology, muscular sysetms, blood chemistry, respiration, reproduction, and excretion. Part Three provides a new synthetic perspective on the phylum's zoogeography and evolutionary relationships, both to other phyla and within the phylum. It utilizes information from the fossil record, paleo-oceanographic data, and comparative studies of immunology, physiology, embryology, and anatomy.

Chemical Zoology V4
Author: Marcel Florkin
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323145876
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 565
Book Description
Chemical Zoology, Volume IV: Annelida, Echiura, and Sipuncula presents chemical information on zoological significance of Annelida, Echiura, and Sipuncula. This book is organized into 13 chapters that tackle the biological and biochemical aspects of these phyla. The opening chapter describes the comparative anatomy, phylogeny, and classification of Annelida, Echiura, and Sipuncula. The book goes on discussing the biological aspects of these phyla, including nutrition and digestion; respiration and energy metabolism; oxygen transport; and carbohydrate and nitrogen metabolism. This volume also covers these organisms' composition of guanidine compounds and phosphagens, lipids, inorganic components, and pigments. Other chapters deal with the growth and development, luminescence, endocrines, and pharmacologic properties of Annelida, Echiura, and Sipuncula. This book is an invaluable resource for zoologists and biochemists.

The Light and Smith Manual
Author: James T. Carlton
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520930436
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1028
Book Description
The Fourth Edition of The Light and Smith Manual continues a sixty-five-year tradition of providing to both students and professionals an indispensable, comprehensive, and authoritative guide to Pacific coast marine invertebrates of coastal waters, rocky shores, sandy beaches, tidal mud flats, salt marshes, and floats and docks. This classic and unparalleled reference has been newly expanded to include all common and many rare species from Point Conception, California, to the Columbia River, one of the most studied areas in the world for marine invertebrates. In addition, although focused on the central and northern California and Oregon coasts, this encyclopedic source is useful for anyone working in North American coastal ecosystems, from Alaska to Mexico. More than one hundred scholars have provided new keys, illustrations, and annotated species lists for over 3,500 species of intertidal and many shallow water marine organisms ranging from protozoans to sea squirts. This expanded volume covers sponges, sea anemones, hydroids, jellyfish, flatworms, polychaetes, amphipods, crabs, insects, snails, clams, chitons, and scores of other important groups. The Fourth Edition also features introductory chapters on marine habitats and biogeography, interstitial marine life, and intertidal parasites, as well as expanded treatments of common planktonic organisms likely to be encountered in near-to-shore shallow waters.
