The Phonology and Morphology of Reduplication

The Phonology and Morphology of Reduplication PDF Author: Eric Raimy
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 311082583X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
This book proposes a new representational analysis of reduplication based on making explicit precedence relations in phonological representations. The main claim is that reduplication results from loops in the precedence structure of phonological representations. Modular rule based analyses of overapplication and underapplication effects including backcopying are presented to argue against the McCarthy and Prince (1995) claim that a derivational model of reduplication is conceptually and empirically inadequate. Other sections of the book discuss the implications of explicit precedence information for the concatenation of morphemes, the analysis of infixation, and templates in reduplication. Analyses of relevant phenomena from Indonesian, Tohono Oodham, Chaha, Chumash and Nancowry among other languages are provided.

The Morphology and Phonology of Exponence

The Morphology and Phonology of Exponence PDF Author: Jochen Trommer
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0191638110
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
Exponence refers to the mapping of morphosyntactic structure to phonological representations, a research area which is not only highly controversial, but also approached in fundamentally different ways in theoretical morphology and phonology. This volume brings together leading specialists from morphosyntax and morphophonology. The authors address common problems, questions and solutions in both areas, and formulate a coherent research program for exponence which integrates the central insights of the last decades and provides important new challenges for the future. The book is aimed at phonologists, morphologists, and syntacticians of all theoretical persuasions at graduate level and above.

Phonology and Morphology of the Germanic Languages

Phonology and Morphology of the Germanic Languages PDF Author: Wolfgang Kehrein
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 3110919761
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 308

Book Description
The papers collected in this volume apply principles of phonology and morphology to the Germanic languages. Phonological phenomena range from subsegmental over phonemic to prosodic units (as syllables, pitch accent, stress). Morphology includes properties of roots, derivation, inflection, and words. The analyses deal with language-internal and comparative aspects, covering the whole (European) range of Germanic languages. From a theoretical perspective, most papers concentrate on constraint-based approaches. Crucial to those theories are principles of the phonology-morphology interaction, both within and between languages. The well documented Germanic languages provide an excellent field for research and almost all papers deal with aspects of the interface.

Yearbook of Morphology 1993

Yearbook of Morphology 1993 PDF Author: Geert Booij
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401737126
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 274

Book Description
Recent years have seen a revival of interest in morphology. The Yearbook of Morphology series supports and enforces this upswing of morphological research and gives an overview of the current issues and debates at the heart of this revival. The Yearbook of Morphology 1993 focuses on prosodic morphology, i.e. the interaction between morphological and prosodic structure, on the semantics of word formation, and on a number of related issues in the realm of inflection: the structure of paradigms, the relation between inflection and word formation, and patterns of language change with respect to inflection. There is also discussion of the relevance of the notion `level ordering' for morphological generalizations. All theoretical and historical linguists, morphologists, and phonologists will want to read this volume.
