Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en

Book Description
Talk Nigeria was created to help those that often travel to and from Nigeria and would like a more efficient way of communicating with the majority of Nigerians. This handbook will enable foreign-born Nigerians and their families to teach their native language to their children. Talk Nigeria makes it possible for them to not only learn the languages, but also to assist them with phonetic pronunciation of the words in their native languages. This is not just another boring language guide that is only based upon endless repetitions of language drills. It is a handbook that promotes quick and effective communication with Nigerians in the three major languages. It includes • easy-to-read translations from English into the three main languages spoken in Nigeria—Yoruba, Ibo, and Hausa, • all translations include the phonetic pronunciation for each word and phrase; • translations for greetings, everyday phrases, and a reference dictionary. An innovative way to learn to speak a very common African language, this handbook is an indispensable guide to speaking the Nigerian languages correctly and effectively.

Studies in Nigerian Linguistics

Studies in Nigerian Linguistics PDF Author: Ndimele, Ozo-mekuri
Publisher: M & J Grand Orbit Communications
ISBN: 9785416461
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 500

Book Description
Studies in Nigerian Linguistics is a compilation of research papers on topical issues in Nigerian languages and linguistics covering three main areas of research, viz.: Language and Society, Applied Linguistics and Formal Linguistics. The papers in this volume are sectioned as such, even though there are bits of overlapping, especially for some of the papers contained in the first and second sections. The first fifteen (15) papers focus on the major theme of Language and Society in Nigeria. Many of the papers in this section address some peculiar sociolinguistic issues that affect the nation, including the nagging and lingering problem regarding the “language question” for the Nigerian nation even after five decades of the attainment of “Political Independence”, language and national development and language varieties. Section 2 contains papers in Applied Linguistics in its narrow and extended senses. There are papers on language teaching and learning, interference and intraference phenomena, language engineering (with focus on codification), communication disorders, and much more. The third section contains sixteen (16) papers in the core areas of linguistics, including phonology, morphology and syntax of Nigerian languages. Some of the papers address aspects of the phonological and morphosyntactic processes of deletion, affixation, cliticisation, causativisation, complementation, serialisation, agreement, and much more. The phrasal structure and pronominal systems of some languages were also discussed.

Nigerian English

Nigerian English PDF Author: David Jowitt
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 1501504509
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 251

Book Description
Although the past few decades have witnessed growing interest in varieties of English around the world, no study of the Nigerian variety intended for the international market has yet been published. Making use of well-known paradigms, the book will relate Nigerian English, as a ‘Second Language’ variety, to other World Englishes. Its chief overall concern, however, is to provide a detailed descriptive account of the variety, seeking to show what is distinctive about it and also, in this perspective, distinguishing between more educated and less educated usage. After giving a sociolinguistic profile of Nigeria, where English today enjoys a more prominent role than ever before, it will examine in turn the phonology, morpho-syntax, and lexico-semantics of Nigerian English, with samples of written texts from the eighteenth century to the present. It will also give a comprehensive summary of academic research carried out in the field over the past fifty years. In this way the book will provide an introduction to the subject for the benefit of scholars and students in universities in many countries, and will serve as a useful companion to other books in De Gruyter Mouton's Dialects of English series.

Introductory Phonetics and Phonology of English

Introductory Phonetics and Phonology of English PDF Author: Iyabode Omolara Daniel
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443827460
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 130

Book Description
Introductory Phonetics and Phonology of English attempts to provide a practical guide to the learner in all ramifications of theoretical and practical uses of the phonetics and phonology of the English language. Useful suggestions and tips are also given on how to overcome the terror of the sounds of English. An attempt is also made to give detailed information on the workings of the prosodic features of English. This is especially necessary, as they remain, largely, the most confounding aspect of the English language to the average Nigerian speaker of English. The distinctive phonological features of the English sounds are also painstakingly discussed to help make the identification and description of the sounds of English even more interesting and accessible. The discussion about the phonological tendencies of the sounds of the English language is meant to help the reader see the English sounds as functional entities that go beyond the theoretical descriptions of their articulatory processes in the classroom. This book thus serves as a useful introductory text. If the success of the first edition is anything to go by, it is obvious that many students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels have found the book a helpful guide into understanding and mastering the phonetics and phonology of English. Moreover, certificate class students at secondary school level have also found the many segmental and suprasegmental examples very practical and helpful to their mastery of English phonetics.

The Numeral Systems of Nigerian Languages

The Numeral Systems of Nigerian Languages PDF Author: Ndimele, Ozo-mekuri
Publisher: M & J Grand Orbit Communications
ISBN: 9785412741
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 384

Book Description
The papers in this collection present the numeral systems of more than twenty Nigerian languages. The papers mainly emanate from a workshop on the numeral systems of Nigerian languages organised by the Linguistic Association of Nigeria during its 23rd Annual Conference which was held at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The workshop arose from awareness created by Dr. Eugene S.L. Chan on the need for Nigerian linguists to document this severely endangered but very important aspect of natural languages. The quantum of mathematical computations - addition, multiplication, subtraction, or a combination of two or all of these - involved in the numeral systems of Nigerian languages is remarkable. The papers reveal that a variety of numeral systems do exist, such as: binary, decimal, incomplete decimal, duodecimal, quinary, quaternary, ternary, mixed, body-part tally systems, and much more. The book is a resource about how different languages manipulate their numeral systems.
